중국 전통 곤곡 영역본의 트랜스크리에이션 양상 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 중국 전통 희곡 중 하나인 곤곡 “모란정(牡丹亭)”을 영어권에 전달할 때 언어적, 시대적, 문화적 간극을 해소하기 위해 어떠한 트랜스크리에이션 양상을 보이는지 “모란정” 중에서도 ‘경몽’을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 번역과 창조를 동시에 아우르는 트랜스크리에이션을 세 가지 양상으로 분류한 선행연구를 바탕으로 ‘경몽’ 영역본에서 트랜스크리에이션 양상 및 빈도를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 영역본에서는 원문의 ‘형태’만 변형하는 경우, ‘형태’와 ‘의미’를 변형하는 경우, 이 두 가지 트랜스크리에이션 방법을 채택한 경우가 많았고, 원문의 ‘형태’, ‘의미’, ‘목적성’을 모두 변형한 사례는 찾을 수 없었다. 즉, “모란정”을 타 문화권에 전달하고 타 문화권 독자의 이해를 증진한다는 목적은 변하지 않는 것이다. 본고에서 살펴본 “모란정” 영역본 트랜스크리에이션 양상 분석을 통해 곤곡 예술에 대한 타 문화권의 이해를 증진하고, 동서양 문화 교류와 융합을 촉진하는 데 기여하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the transcreational aspects of the Chinese Kunqu The Peony Pavilion in order to bridge the linguistic, temporal, and cultural gaps when introducing it to English-speaking audiences. Specifically, the focus is on the section called “An Enchanting Dream” in The Peony Pavilion. Building upon previous research that categorizes transcreation practices into three aspects, this analysis investigates the patterns and frequency of transcreation practices in the English version of “An Enchanting Dream”. The results reveal that the majority of transcreational practices involve either altering the “form” alone or both the “form” and “meaning”, while there were no instances found where all three elements of “form”, “meaning”, and “intention” were transformed. In other words, the objective of conveying The Peony Pavilion to other cultural realms and enhancing the understanding of readers from different cultures remains unchanged. By analyzing the transcreational aspects of The Peony Pavilion, this study seeks to enhance cross-cultural understanding of Chinese theatrical art and contribute to the promotion of cultural exchange and fusion between East and West.
