‘한여름 밤의 꿈’과 ‘걸 온 더 트레인’ 소설 속 등장인물의 모방 욕망에 대한 비교 연구

국문 초록

르네 지라르에 의하면 사람들의 욕망은 개인의 본성에 따른 주체적 산물이 아니라 타인으로부터 간접화한 것이라고 한다. 그는 ‘낭만적 거짓과 소설적 진실’이라는 저서를 통해 욕망 주체, 욕망 대상, 그리고 욕망 중개자로 이루어지는 욕망의 삼각형 구조를 제시하면서 욕망 주체가 욕망 중개자를 모방하는 모방 욕망이 증오, 원한, 폭력의 근원이라는 점을 강조하고, 그 해결책으로서 모방적 경쟁 관계를 중단할 것을 제안하였다. 르네 지라르는 욕망 중개자의 존재는 현실에서보다 소설에서 더 잘 드러나며 오직 소설가들만이 욕망의 모방적 성격을 드러내 준다고 하면서, 세르반테스, 플로베르, 스탕달의 작품 속 등장인물들에 대한 분석을 통해 모방 욕망 이론을 체계화하여 제시하였다. 이 논문에서는 르네 지라르의 모방 욕망 이론을 고전 영문 소설과 현대 영문 소설에 나오는 등장인물들에게 구체적으로 적용하여 비교해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 셰익스피어의 ‘한여름 밤의 꿈’과 폴라 호킨스의 ‘걸 온 더 트레인’에 등장하는 인물들의 욕망 체계를 비교하여 분석해 볼 것이며, 이 과정에서, 중세나 근대의 인물들의 욕망 체계와 현대인의 욕망 체계에 어떠한 변화가 있었는지를 살펴보고, 이러한 변화를 가져오게 된 원인이 무엇인지를 심층적으로 고찰하여 보고자 한다.

영문 초록

According to René Girard, human’s desire is not a subjective product stemmed from the nature of an individual but an indirect one from others. In his masterpiece, ‘Mensonge romantique et vérité romanesque (Romantic lie & romanesque truth)’, he suggests a mimetic triangle consisting of an object of desire, a subject of desire, and a mediator of desire and states that mimetic desire of the subject against the mediator incurs hate, ressentiment, and violence. Finally he finds out the solution, from stopping the mimetic competition of each other. René Girard argues that the existence of the mediator of desire is more evident in novels than in reality, and that novelists only reveal the mimetic nature of desire. He systematically presents the Theory of Mimetic Desire by analyzing the characters in the novels of Cervantès, Flaubert, and Stendhal. In this paper, I will try to apply René Girard’s Theory of Mimetic Desire to the characters in classic English novels and those in modern English novels. To this end, I will comparatively analyze the mimetic desires of the characters in the novels of A Midsummer Night’s Dream of Shakespeare’s and The Girl on the Train of Paula Hawkins s. In this process, I will look at the changes of mimetic desires of the characters between Middle and Modern Ages, and Modern Times. In addition, I will look deeply into what causes these changes.
