국문 초록

문학작품은 해당 지역의 사회문화적 특색과 정서구조를 담고 있기때문에, 지역에 대한 사회적 독해역량은 물론 인간 고유의 공감력을 활성화함으로써 지역공동체적 가치를 인식시키는 확장력을 지니고 있다. 이로 인해 문학작품은 지역학 (Area studies)의 적절한 소재가 될 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 문학의 인문학적 통찰력과 지역학적 콘텐츠를 융합하는 접근을 통해 지역에 대한 깊이 있는 이해와 공감의 영역을 확장하고, 이러한 공감력을 경직되고 폐쇄적인 사고를 넘어서는 다학제적 감수성으로 확장하는 과정을 탐색한다. 문학의 잠재력을 지역 연구 교과과정과 연계시키는 구체적 사례로서, 특히 미국문학 작품들을 소재로 한 미국학(American studies) 교과과정을 설계하고자 한다. 문학교육과 지역 연구의 접점을 바탕으로 한 미국학 교과과정을 통해 장소정치나 생명정치에 대한 인식을 심화하고, 이러한 사회적 공감(empathy)의 영역을 인류의 미래 지속가능성을 향한 탈경계적인 공존의 세계시민의식으로 활성화하는 담론을 모색하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Literature has a strong capacity for cultural understanding of the area, and it nurtures a profound reading of social empathy. In the area studies involved in the multi-layered characteristics and sensibility structure of the place, literary works deeply rooted in the area are regarded as appropriate educational material. This paper attempts to develop an interdisciplinary curriculum of the American studies and American literary education focused on the major area. The curriculum design of American studies aims at a deep understanding of the meaning of America as a nation and culture, through interdisciplinary ways of thinking. The pedagogical discussion of the area studies combined with a literature education process involves a deep questioning of place politics and biopolitics of closed nationalism. This educational reading process opens up a democratic awareness of social empathy and ultimately leads to an empathetic perspective of the global concern for the sustainability of the human future. This paper proposes an interdisciplinary American studies program as a strongly intertwined potential reservoir for a sociological perspective of our coexistence as global citizens.
