국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 제임스 뉴튼 하워드(James Newton Howard)의 음악에 활용된 화성 진행의 특색이영화의 스토리 진행에 있어 어떠한 연관성을 가지는지 고찰함으로써 영화음악 제작 기법의 새로운 접근방식을 모색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 네오리만 변형이론의 이론적 배경을 이해하고, 제임스의 화성 진행을 분석하는 것을 통하여 영화 안에서의 다양한 역할 등 시각과 청각적 매체의 상호작용성에 대해초점을 두고 연구를 진행하였다. 연구의 결과, 공통음을 가지지만 같거나 다른 성질의 화성 진행, 공통음이 없는 화성 진행의 특징을 알 수 있었으며, 네오리만 변형이론을 활용한 화성 진행과 영상과의 상호작용성 특징으로는 ‘연상 효과’, ‘몰입 효과’, ‘긴장 효과’가 도출되었다. 본 연구를 통해 음악의 화성진행이 영상과의 상호작용을 높이는데 직접적인 요인이 됨을 확인하였으며, 영화음악 제작 분야의 발전을 위한 유의미한 자료로 활용되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

This study exhibits how to examine the harmony progressive characteristics used in James Newton Howard’s music. James represents interaction and understanding of his music theory in the films. The films that portrays the theoretical background of the Neo-Riemannian Transformation Theory. This transformation analyzed James Newton Howard’s music interaction between the music and films. As a result of the study, the chromatic progression which is the harmony that has a common tone, and the harmony which does not have a common tone of James’s composition technique were revealed. In addition, his technique draws the three results of interaction with film and music: the ‘remind effect’,‘concetration effect’, and ‘tension effect’. Through out this study, it was certified that certain harmony progression of music can be a obvious factor in enhancing interaction with movies, and it is hoped that the derived research results can be used as meaningful information for the development of the field of video music contents.
