국문 초록

목적 이 연구는 초기 문식성(early literacy)의 전 단계에 해당하는 발생적 문식성(emergent literacy)의 개념과 쟁점을 검토하고자 하였다. 방법 이를 위하여 Marie M. Clay의 이론을 중심으로 발생적 문식성 개념을 연구사적 관점에서 살펴보았다. 결과 태어나서 누리과정, 유치원 교육과정에 이르기까지 구성되는 학습자의 발생적 문식성은 초등학교 입학 후 배우는 읽기 학습과 쓰기 학습의 밑바탕이 되고, 읽기와 쓰기 태도를 형성한다는 면에서 큰 관심이 요구된다. 결론 발생적 문식성에 관한 깊은 이해는 초기 문식성의 개념과 더불어 초등 읽기교육과 쓰기교육 교실 현장이나 연구 과정에서 정교한 진단을 내리는 이론적 바탕이 된다는 점, 교육 실천은 물론이고 앞으로 차근차근 규명해야 할 여러 연구 주제와 연결되어 있다는 점, 더 나아가 학교와 지역사회에 더 효과적이고 표적화된 개입과 정책 정보를 제공하는 바탕이 될 수 있다는 면에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study aims to examine the concepts and issues related to the stage before early literacy, referred to as emergent literacy. Methods To this end, the concept of emergent literacy was analyzed from a historical perspective, with a focus on the theories of Marie M. Clay. Results The emergent literacy of learners from birth through nursery and kindergarten is of great scholarly interest, because it underpins the development of reading and writing skills and shapes attitudes toward these skills as children progress into elementary school. Conclusions An in-depth understanding of emergent literacy, along with early literacy concepts, is essential as it provides a theoretical foundation for sophisticated diagnoses in primary reading and writing classrooms and research. Moreover, it is closely linked to educational practice and raises numerous research questions that require further exploration. This concept can help inform effective, targeted interventions and policies for schools and communities.
