국문 초록

인지기능의 저하는 나이 듦에 의한 자연스러운 현상으로 여겨지기도 하지만, 그 정도가 심할 경우 일상생활의 어려움뿐만 아니라 대인관계 및 사회활동을 저해하고, 자아존중감의 저하와 심리적 위축, 고립과 우울을 심화시키는 등 삶의 전반에 부정적 영향을 미치게 된다. 본 연구는 노년기 우울감과 인지기능의 관계를 고찰하고 도시규모의 조절효과를 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 한국고용정보원의고령화연구패널 7차년도 자료를 활용하여 2차 자료 분석을 실시하였다. 노인의 우울감과 인지기능의 관계에서 도시규모의 조절효과를 확인한 결과, 우울감의 증가는 읍면부에 비해 대도시보다 중소도시가 영향을 더 많이 받는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 노인의 우울감과 인지기능에 대한 도시, 지역효과를 살펴보았고, 관련 연구의 활성화와 노인관련 정책 및 제도, 도시개발지표를 고안함에 있어 기초자료를 제공했다는 점에서 실천적 의의를 지닌다.

영문 초록

The decline in cognitive function is considered a natural phenomenon with aging. However, when it is severe, it can bring about difficulties in social relationships and activities as well as negatively affects, low self-esteem, isolation, and depression. This study examines the relationship between older adults’ depressive symptoms and cognitive function as well as the moderating effect of city size. To this end, the 7th wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging(KLoSA) was analyzed. The results confirmed the moderation effect of city size in the relationship between older adults’ depression and cognitive functioning. The participants living in small- or medium-sized cities, as compared to the participants living in large cities, showed a more rapid decrease in cognitive functioning when they had more depressive symptoms. This study is of practical significance in that it examined urban and regional effects on the relationship between older adults’ depressive symptoms and cognitive functioning to which has been paid relatively little attention. The current study also provides support in revitalizing related studies and devising policies and programs for older adults.
