동화 문학(Literary fairy Tales)의 ‘고집’에 관한 담론

국문 초록

민담 설화를 바탕으로 문학의 형태로 발전한 동화는 역사와 시대를 경유하여 다양하게 변주되고 윤색되었다. 대부분의 동화는 어른들의 욕망과 시선을 통해 아이를 사회 관습이나 체제에 순응하도록 만들기 위한 것이었다. 19세기 부르주아 계급의 성장과 함께 ‘가정’의 역할이 강조되었으며 아이를 훈육하는 주요한 역할을 아버지가 담당했다. 무엇보다아이의 ‘고집’이라는 기질은 주요한 교정의 목표이자 반드시 제거되어야 할 교육 대상이었다. 고집 센 아이를 훈육하는수단으로 동화문학이 사용되면서 동화는 어른의 욕망을 강화하며 어른의 말을 듣지 않는 아이의 이야기는 동화문학에서지속적으로 나타나는 주제로 등장했다. 그 아이가 결국 후회하고 반성하며 자신의 행동을 뉘우치게 되는 과정은 사회의올바른 작동을 위한 장치로 작용했다. 이야기 속의 고집 센 아이는 불행과 짝패를 이루는 경우가 많았으며 여자 아이의경우 고집을 버리지 못해 결국 처벌 받고 응징을 당하는 경고용 동화를 쉽게 접할 수 있다. 고집 센 여자아이는 불행하다는 공식을 퀴어하게 만든 동화 가운데 아스트리드 린드그렌의 <삐삐 시리즈>를 들 수있다. 삐삐의 고집 은 가정, 학교, 예절, 외모, 젠더 등 다양한 층위의 기준과 정상을 뒤집고 해체하여 퀴어하게 만든다. 고집 센 삐삐는 정체를 규정받지 않으며 타자들과 연대하고 놀이와 상상력을 통해 스스로 성장한다. 삐삐가 고집을 부릴때 무엇을 하고 있는가에 주목해 본다면 동화문학 담론의 정상적이라고 정의된 가치들을 제고해 볼 수 있다. 삐삐의 모험, 놀이, 거짓말은 고집의 퀴어성을 확장시킨다. 이러한 읽기를 통해 장애, 괴물, 동물을 정의해 온 동화를 다르게 상상하면서 용감하고 새로운 인물과 이야기들을 전망할 수 있다. 또한 동화담론에서 고집을 다루어 온 방식을 비틀어 삐삐를읽음으로써 동화에서 다루지 않았거나 전형화 된 인물이나 가치들을 수정하면서 수많은 고집 센 삐삐들이 넘쳐나는 전망이 가능하다.

영문 초록

Fairy tales, which were developed as a kind of literature based on a story of folk tales, have been varied through the times. Most fairy tales were to be aimed for children to comply with the existing society according to adults’ desire and perspective. The development of the bourgeoisie in the 19th century led to the fact that the role of ‘home’ was emphasized, where Father was in charge of discipline. Above all, the personality of children’s willfulness was a primary objective to be removed and corrected. Fairy tales were the necessary vehicle to educate children in the patriarchal society and also strengthened the desire of adults. The naughty child is a perennial theme in fairy tales, who finally reflects upon past and comes to regrets his or her bad behaviors. The process worked as a device for a normal and righteous society. Most of the warning fairy tales regard the willful children related to unhappiness, and especially willful girls are punished and revenged for their willfulness. This paper explores another willful girl, Pippi, invented by Astrid Lindgren, who appropriates willfulness and subverts the existing order and ideology of gender, home, education, and family etc.. Her ‘queer willfulness’ questions and breaks up the normality and values in the adult world. The willful girl’s identity is not prescribed and she is in solidarity and considerate to ‘the other’ and criticizes the normal adult world. This paper also demonstrates what willfulness is doing when Pippi is willful. Her adventures, plays, and lies extend the queerness of willfulness. Pippi’s reading is to prospect other brave and new characters and narratives. such as the disabled characters, monsters and animals in the fairy tales. And also, by reading the way willfulness is handled in the discourse of fairy tales critically, the sterotyped characters and social values are to be modified, where the disfigured are to go free and willful girls are suspected to overflow in the fairy tales.
