한반도 주변 해역 표층 수온 그래프를 해석하는 과정에서 중학생들이 인식하는 인지적 부담에 대한 연구

국문 초록

목적 본 연구에서는 중학생들이 한반도 주변 해양의 표층 수온 분포 그래프를 해석하는 과정에서 그래프의 유형에 따라 그들이 인식하는 인지적 부담을 확인하고, 그 정보를 제공함으로써 중학교 교사들이 교수학습 자료를 개발하는데 도움을 주고자 하였다. 방법 이를 위해 연구자들은 시선 추적기(Tobii Pro Glasses 2 모델)를 활용하여 중학생들(N=32)이 한반도 주변 해역 표층 수온 그래프를 해석하는 동안 그들의 시선 고정 시간과 동공 직경에 대한 자료를 수집하였다. 그리고 연구자들은 두 집단 사이의 인지적 부담에 대한 차이를 확인하기 위해 Exel 프로그램을 이용하여 독립표본 t검정(two independent samples t-test)을 실시하였다. 결과 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 등수온선이 강화된 그래프를 해석할 때는 중학생들의 시선 고정 비율이 범례 영역보다 데이터 영역에서 더 높았다. 색상이 강화된 그래프를 해석할 때는 그들의 시선 고정 비율이 데이터 영역 보다 범례 영역에서 더 높았다. 즉 중학생들은 등수온선 그래프를 해석할 때 보다 위경도선 그래프를 해석할 때 범례 영역에 의존하였다. 둘째, 중학생들이 그래프를 해석하는 모든 과정에서 동공 직경은 기준 동공 직경에 비해 확장되었다. 중학생들의 동공 직경은 단계 1, 단계 2, 단계 3으로 갈수록 더 많이 확장되었다. 그리고 중학생들의 동공 크기는 등수온선 그래프를 해석할 때 보다 위경도선 그래프를 해석할 때 더 많이 확장되었다. 결론 중학생들은 등수온선 그래프를 해석할 때 보다 위경도선 그래프를 해석할 때 인지적 부담을 더 갖았다. 그리고 그들은 그래프를 해석하는 과정에서 낮은 수준의 활동보다 높은 수준의 활동에서 인지적 부담을 더 갖았다. 그러므로 학생들의 인지적 부담을 덜어주기 위해 그래프를 재구성할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purpose of this study is to identify the cognitive load that middle school students perceive in interpreting of sea surface temperature around the Korean Peninsula according to the type of graph, and to help middle school teachers develop teaching and learning materials by providing information related to cognitive load. Methods For This, we collected and analyzed data on the fixation duration and pupil diameter of middle school students(N=32) while interpreting of sea surface temperature around the Korean Peninsula using the eye tracker(Tobii Pro Glass 2 model). And we conducted an independent sample t-test using the Exel on two eye tracking data to confirm the cognitive load between the two groups. Results The results were as follows. First, the fixation duration rate was higher in the data area than in the legend area when middle school students read the sea surface temperature at the contoured graph. However, it was the opposite when they read the sea surface temperature at the colored graph. They depended on the legend area when reading the colored graph rather than when reading the contoured graph. Second, In all the processes of middle school students interpreting the graph, their pupil diameter was expanded compared to the standard pupil diameter. Their pupil diameter expanded more and more as they progressed to Step 1(the activity of reading temperature), Step 2(the activities to compare temperature gradients), and Step 3(the activities to find cause of the same temperature). The middle school students’ pupil diameter was further expanded when interpreting the colored graph rather than when interpreting the contoured graph. Conclusions Middle school students had more cognitive load when interpreting the colored graph rather than when interpreting the contoured graph. And they had more cognitive load in high-level activities than in low-level activities in the process of interpreting graphs. Therefore, it is necessary to reconstruct the graph of sea surface temperature around the Korean Peninsula to relieve the middle school students’ cognitive load.
