Cross-cultural differences in text structure and their implications for Korean as a foreign language reading

국문 초록

대조 수사학(contrastive rhetoric)은 각 문화와 언어는 고유의 텍스트 수사 구조를 가진다는 개념을 기반으로 제 2 언어 읽기 장애를 이해하는데 하나의 이론적 도구를 제공해 왔다. 이전 연구들은 텍스트 구조가 독자의 형식 스키마(formal schemata)와 상호작용을 통해 읽기 이해와 회상에 영향을 미친다는 것을 보여준다.(Carrell 1984, Hinds 1983, Eggington 1987) 본 연구는 작은 실험을 통해 이 연구 결과가 전형적인 한국 텍스트 구조에도 적용이 되는지를 조사했다. 전형적인 한국어 텍스트 구조 중 하나인 기승전결 구조의 뉴스 칼럼을 영어 원어민 참여자들과 한국어 원어민 참여자들에게 읽게 한 후 즉각 회상 및 지연 회상 실험을 실시했다. 그 결과 한국인 참여자와 비교해 영어 원어민 참가자들이 해당 텍스트 내용의 회상 뿐 아니라 그 유지에 있어 더 큰 어려움을 겪은 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구 결과는 또한 외국어로서의 한국어 학습자들에게 개별 문화 고유의 텍스트 수사 패턴 대한 인식을 제고시키고 더욱 효과적으로 글의 요지 및 논리 전개 방식을 이해할 수 있도록 교수해야하는 교육적 함의를 시사한다.

영문 초록

Based on the notion that each culture and language has rhetorical structures unique to it, contrastive rhetoric(CR) has provided a theoretical lens through which to understand L2 reading difficulties. One of the major research findings was that text structure interacts with the reader s formal schemata to affect reading comprehension and recall. In a small experiment, this study explored whether this finding may apply to the typical Korean rhetorical structure. Results of the study largely confirmed the findings of the previous studies by demonstrating that English L1 participants had greater difficulties recalling and retaining the content of a news editorial written in a Korean traditional ki-sung-chon-kyul rhetorical pattern, compared to Korean L1 participants. This paper concludes by discussing the pedagogical implications of the results for Korean as a foreign language learners that includes how to support advanced learners in familiarizing themselves with the cross-cultural differences in rhetorical structures
