학문목적 외국인 유학생의 학업 경험에 관한 질적 연구

국문 초록

이 연구는 학문 목적 외국인 유학생을 대상으로 유학 경험에서 대부분을 차지하는 학업 수행과 관련하여 자기결정(Self-Determination) 정도를 심층적으로 파악하는 데 목적에 따라, 자기결정성 동기 설문지(SQR-A)를 질적연구 방법인 개별 심층 면접법(in-depth-interviewing)을 사용하여 외국인 유학생의 학업 경험을 보다 총체적으로이해하려고 하였다. 이를 통해 외국인 유학생의 학업 경험에서 특정 동기의 높고 낮음이 유발된 구체적인 맥락을보다 심층적이고 다각도로 분석하여, 외국인 유학생의 성공적인 학업 수행을 위한 교육과정을 제안하고자 하였다. 연구 결과, 학문 목적 외국인 유학생의 자기결정성 동기 양상은 대부분의 연구 결과와 마찬가지로 ‘확인된 조절’ 유형이 가장 높게 나타났다. 이는 어학연수와 다르게 교양 및 전공필수 과목과 같은 다양한 교과목을 수행해야하기에 학습자 스스로 최대한 내면화된 동기에서 발현된 것으로 보인다. 또한 한국어 학업 자체에 대한 기쁨이나만족보다는 한국어 학업을 통한 한국 유학생활의 목적 달성에 더 관심이 많다는 것으로 해석할 수 있다. 또한 학업 경험에 따른 동기 유발 원인은 학습자 개인별 목적이 다양해지고, 학업 수행에서 겪는 경험에 따라 다르게 작용되었다. 대부분의 외국인 유학생들이 20대 초반이라는 점을 고려하였을 때 학업 내용과 체계보다도 학습자 개인의 내재적인 요인이 학업에 미칠 가능성이 큰 것으로 파악되었다. 이에 따라 외국인 유학생의 개별적 역량을 강화하고 초국가주의 관점에서 ‘유학-취업-이주’라는 총체적 유학 경험에 기반한 석 박사 유학생을 위한 교육과정을 제안하였는데, 이 교육과정에는 ‘언어 역량 과정’, ‘전공 역량 과정’, ‘공동체 역량 과정’, ‘개별화 역량 과정’으로 학습자 개인의 특성에 따라 학업을 수행할 수 있도록 구성하였다.

영문 초록

The objective of this study is to deeply understand the degree of self-determination in relation to academic performance that takes up the most of experiences in studying abroad targeting the foreign students for academic purposes. Thus, this study aimed to more generally understand the academic experiences of foreign students by using the individual in-depth interviewing method which is a qualitative research method using the questionnaire of self-determination motivation(SQR-A). Through this, this study aimed to suggest the curriculum for successful academic performance by more deeply and multilaterally analyzing the concrete context that caused the high and low of a specific motivation in academic experiences of foreign students. In the results of this study, the aspect of self-determination motivation of foreign students for academic purposes showed the highest ‘identified regulation’ type, which is in common with the results of the most researches. Contrary to language training, they should perform various subjects such as courses for general education and required major courses, so the learners’ internalized motivation must be revealed the most. Also, it could be interpreted as the foreign students were more interested in achieving the purposes of studying abroad in Korea by learning Korean language, rather than feeling joyful or satisfied with learning Korean language itself. Also, the cause for motivation according to academic experiences was differently working according to the diversified purposes of individual learners and experiences in academic performance. Considering that most of the foreign students were in their early 20s, the intrinsic factor of individual learners had bigger effects on studies than learning contents and system. Thus, this study suggested the master/doctoral curriculum based on general experiences in studying abroad such as ‘study abroad-employment-immigration’ in the trans-nationalistic perspective by strengthening the individual competencies of foreign students. This curriculum was composed of ‘linguistic competency course’, ‘major competency course’, ‘community competency course’, and ‘individualized competency course’, so the learners could perform their studies according to their individual characteristics.
