사할린 한인의 영주귀국과 문화 상징으로서의 주거공간

국문 초록

이 논문은 사할린 한인의 영주귀국에 있어 주거공간이 지니는 상징성과 의미에 대하여 고찰할 것을 목적으로하였다. 사할린과 한국에 거주하는 중년 및 고령층 한인들을 대상으로 실시한 현장연구를 바탕으로 다음과 같은점을 논의하였다. 우선 사할린 한인의 영주귀국이 한국, 일본 양 정부의 국가사업으로서 등장하게 된 역사적 맥락을 살펴보았다. 둘째, 영주귀국 정책과 한국 내 초기 정착 지원 내용을 고찰하고 정부가 사할린 한인을 특수하게대우하는 점을 확인하였다. 셋째, 실제 사할린 한인들이 한국에서 초기 정착하는 단계에서 주거공간을 몸으로 경험하는 양상을 서술하였다. 한국에서 ‘제공’되는 신축 아파트에 입주한 귀국자들은 아파트와 아파트단지의 환경을소비하면서 순간적으로 감격한다. 집과 집안에 있는 물건의 질을 통해서 귀국자들은 ‘안전’이나 ‘편리함’을 새롭게인식하고 동시에 자신의 존재 가치를 발견하게 된다. 더불어 아파트는 주거공간을 제공하는 주체(국가)와 그것을받는 자(개인) 사이의 관계를 매개하는 역할을 하고 사할린 한인들로 하여금 국가로부터 ‘인정을 받은 자’로서 인식하게 한다. 또한 사할린에 남은 사람들 사이에서도 한국의 신축 아파트에서 새로운 삶을 살고 싶은 욕망이 형성되며 초국가 공간에서 아파트 ‘고향’이 상상된다. 이 논문은 사할린 한인들에게 한국의 아파트란 단순한 지원과생활수단을 넘어 그들의 존재 가치에 의미를 부여하고 국가와 관계를 맺을 수 있게 하는 상징적인 문화자원이라는 점을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

This paper explores the symbolic roles and meanings of housing for Sakhalin Koreans in the context of their return migration to their so-called homeland, South Korea. Based on the longterm ethnographic research among older Sakhalin Koreans both on Sakhalin and South Korea, this paper considers why and how housing in South Korea is significant for older Sakhalin Koreans. First, in order to understand the fact that the return migration project has been sponsored by the Japanese and South Korean governments, this paper traces the historical contexts of the Japanese colonialism and the Cold War in the Northeast Asia, which affected the lives of Sakhalin Koreans.. Second, the specific features of the return migration policy as well as the material assistance are examined. Such policy shows the ways in which the governments consider Sakhalin Koreans as ‘special’ migrants. Third, this paper offers an ethnograhy of everyday experiences of housing among Sakhalin Korean migrants in South Korea. This paper found that ‘brand-new’ apartments and their material surroundings, which are consisted of the state-sponsored assistance, provoke strong feeling of happiness. As a result the returnees found themselves as valuable subjects. In addition, housing plays a symbolic role of mediating older Sakhalin Korean returnees and the two nation-states. This paper suggests that housing as a symbolic material object serves a cultural source thorough which older Sakhalin Koreans rediscover a sense of self and their relationship with the nation-states.
