미주 한인 이주서사의 상징 활용 양상

국문 초록

20세기 이후 여러 국가를 대상으로 한민족의 이주가 진행되었고, 그를 다룬 문화예술 작품도 다수 발표되었다. 각 작품의 세부적인 요소야 지역과 시대에 따라 다르지만, ‘경계인’의 정체성을 내포하며, ‘이탈-정착-통합’이라는전형적인 서사구조를 반복한다는 점에서 특징적이다. 미주 한민족 이주 서사도 유사한 양상으로 전개되었다. 초기부터 다양한 분야에서 창작이 이루어졌고, 일부 작품은 성취를 인정받기도 했다. 하지만 대체로 역사를 기록하고, 소수자의 목소리를 반영한다는 측면에서 평가되었던 것이 사실이다. 반면 정이삭 감독의 영화 <미나리>(2020)는 한민족 이주 서사를 기반으로 하면서도 세계 여러 나라에서 찬사를받았다. 이러한 가치 확장이 가능했던 이유는 상징을 효과적으로 활용했기 때문이다. 상징은 구체적인 이미지를통해 보편적 사고를 표현하여, 작품의 의미를 풍성하게 만들고 보평적 공감을 이끌어내는 창작방법이기 때문이다. 이 작품에 나타난 상징은 다음과 같은 세 가지 양상으로 정리된다. 첫째, 집과 가족. <미나리>의 핵심적 공간은 ‘모빌홈’인데, 감독은 이를 주거지(house)와 가족관계(home)로 구분하고, 각 의미에 부합하는 캐릭터로 남편 제이콥과 아내 모니카를 제시했다. 이들의 인식과 입장의 차이가 작품전반에서 내부적 갈등을 형성하는 요인으로 작용한다. 둘째, 물과 불. <미나리>에서 ‘물’과 ‘불’은 가족에게 닥친 외부적 위기를 상징한다. 생명력을 뜻하는 ‘물’은 넘치거나 부족함으로써 갈등을 만든다. 반면 파괴를 의미했던 ‘불’은 결말 부분에 이르러 정화의 의미로 전환된다. 여기에 부합되는 공간은 냇가 미나리밭과 집 근처 헛간이다. 셋째, 십자가와 미나리. 십자가는 기독교 문화 전통과 연결된다. 감독은 등장인물의 이름과 역할을 기독교 성인과 일치시키는 창작 방법을 활용했는데, 폴과 제이콥이 여기 해당하는 인물이다. 반면 할머니 순자는 무속적 면모를 가진다. 대신 병을 앓아 손자를 치유하고, 미나리를 키워 가족의 재기를 도모한다. 이런 점에서 그녀는 대속과재생의 의미를 함께 가지는 캐릭터다. 이처럼 <미나리>는 그동안 소수자 집단에 국한되던 이야기를 확장하는 계기가 되었다. 이를 통해 한민족 이주서사의 범주와 인식이 확장되리라 기대한다.

영문 초록

Since the 20th century, migration of the Korean people began in numerous countries and many cultural artworks dealing with such migration were unveiled. While the detailed elements of each work differed according to region and era, it is highlighted by the fact that they all deal with the ‘marginal man’ and repeats the typical narrative structure of ‘detachment-settlementintegration.’ The migration narrative of Koreans in America also has a similar mode. Creative works were made in various sectors from early on, and some works were recognized for their accomplishments. It is a fact, however, that they were mainly evaluated for recording history and reflecting the voices of the minorities. Meanwhile, (2020) directed by Lee Isaac Chung received praise from many countries around the world despite being about the migration narrative of Koreans. The reason why such a value expansion was possible is that symbols were effectively utilized. This is because symbols are creative methods that express universal thoughts through concrete images, enrich the meaning of works, and elicit universal sympathy. The symbols that appear in this work can be summarized into three aspects. 1) home and family. The core space of is the ‘mobile home’ and the director distinguishes the two as a residential space(house) and family relations(home), while presenting the husband Jacob and wife Monica as the characters living up to each meaning. The difference of their perspectives and positions become elements that form internal conflicts throughout the film. 2) water and fire. In , ‘water’ and ‘fire’ symbolize external crises falling upon the family. ‘Water’ represents life power and it brews conflicts by overflowing or having shortages. On the other hand, ‘fire’ that represented destruction has a shift in its meaning toward the conclusion. The space for this is the minari field along the creek and the barn near their house. 3) the Cross and Minari(water celery). The director uses the creative method of matching the names and roles of the characters with Christian saints. Paul and Jacob correspond to this. Meanwhile, grandmother Soonja takes on a shaman appearance. She heals her grandchild by taking a disease on their behalf while raising minari to pray for the family to get back on its feet. From this aspect, her character takes on a meaning of atonement redemption and regeneration. As such, has served as an opportunity to expand the story that has been limited to minority groups. Through this, it is anticipated that the scope and awareness of migration narrative of the Korean people will broaden.
