국문 초록

목적 본 연구는 북한 사회에 확대되고 있는 사교육의 현황 및 영향요인을 통해 북한 사교육의 특징을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 방법 이를 위하여 중, 고, 대학교에 재학 중인 탈북학생 197명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 응답 자료는 SPSS 25.0을 사용하여 북한 사교육의 확산정도, 형태, 비용, 동기 등 실태 파악을 위한 빈도분석과, 사교육 경험이 인적 및 가정환경 특성에 따라 차이가 있는지 확인하기 위한 교차분석을 진행하였다. 결과 북한에서 사교육을 경험한 대상자는 전체의 39%에 이르는데, 비록 제한적이지만 북한에서 사교육이 상당수준 확산되어 있음을 양적으로 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 사교육 경험은 가정의 정치·경제적 지위, 북한 학교 성적 등 북한에서의 문화적 자본에 따라 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 결론 연구를 통해 과거 예체능에 집중되어있던 북한 사교육은 오늘날 지위 상승 수단으로서 기능하고 있으며, 경제적 능력에 따라 교육경험에 격차가 발생하고 있다는 점, 공교육 체계 안에서 사교육이 이루어진다는 점 등 북한 사교육 현상에서 나타나는 특징들이 발견되었다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study aims to analyze the characteristics of private education in North Korea by examining its current expansion and the factors influencing it within North Korean society. Methods A survey was conducted with 197 North Korean defector students enrolled in middle schools, high schools, and universities to investigate their experiences with private education in North Korea. The survey responses were analyzed using SPSS 25.0. Frequency analysis was employed to examine the general aspects of private education in North Korea, including its prevalence, forms, costs, and motivations. Additionally, cross-tabulation analysis was performed to determine whether experiences with private education varied based on individual and household characteristics. Results Of the respondents, 39% reported having participated in private education in North Korea. This finding quantitatively suggests that private education, though limited, has spread considerably within the country. The analysis reveals that experiences with private education vary based on factors such as the family’s political and economic status, school performance, and other forms of cultural capital in North Korea. Conclusions This study finds that while private education in North Korea was previously concentrated on subjects like arts and physical education, it has evolved into a tool for social advancement. There is now a significant disparity in educational experiences based on economic capacity. Additionally, private education is occurring within the public education system, highlighting unique characteristics of private education practices in North Korea.
