군 복학생 중도 이탈 방지 연구

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 남자 대학생들의 군 경험과 복학 경험을 통해 이들의 대학 생활 적응과정을 심층적으로 탐색해보는 것이다. 연구 목적을 위해 25명의 복학생이 심층 면담에 참여하였다. 연구 결과, 군 복무를 하는 동안 학생들은 해낼 수 있는 과제를 완수함으로써 성취감과 자신감을 얻었고 다양한 관계 속에서 자신의 태도 변화와 함께 사회 구성원으로 거듭났다. 무엇보다도 자신의 삶을 돌아보는 충분한 시간을 가짐으로써 삶에 대해 성찰할 기회를 얻었다. 그러나 참여자들은 복학 후 대학 재 적응과정에서 여러 가지 문제(예: 학업, 관계, 진로 등)에 직면했다. 이러한 갈등에도 불구하고 참여자들은 문제를 해결하고자 스스로 전략을 세우는 등 성숙해진 태도를 보였다. 이는 1학년 때와는 다른 태도였으며 복학생들의 고유한 특징으로 나타났다. 이번 연구 결과는 복학생들의 성공적인 학업 활동을 지원하기 위한 대학의 역할과 책임이 강화되어야 함을 강조하고 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this qualitative research is to understand college male students’ retention after returning their school. For the purpose of this study, 25 student veterans participated in in-depth interviews. The results indicated that students achieved a sense of accomplishment and confidence by completing tasks they could do during military service, and they developed sense of community as members of society with people from different cultural backgrounds. In addition, having enough time to reflect on their own life gave them an opportunity internal growth. However, students faced with issues(e.g., academic, social relationships, career planning etc.) regarding college readjustment after returning to their school. Despite this challenges, students nurtured a mature attitude, such as ‘setting up strategies on their own to overcome their issues. This attitude was different from their freshman year, and it appeared as a unique characteristic of the ‘Bok-Hak- Saeng’. This findings suggest that the role and responsibility of universities should be strengthened in order to support successful academic engagement of student veterans.
