디지털미디어시대의 주술적 상상력과 그 현대적 의미 고찰

국문 초록

본 연구의 주된 목적은 문자 이전 시대의 정신세계에 지대한 영향을 끼친 주술적 사유가 어떤 방식으로 오늘날의 디지털미디어에 발현되는지를 고찰하고 그에 대한 현대적 의미를 해석해내는 것이다. 이를 위해 주술적 상상력의 특성을 파악하고, 주술성과 디지털미디어와의 상관관계를 살펴본 후 그것이 현대 디지털 미디엄과 융합되어 공연작품에 어떤 방식으로 형상화되고 있는지 여러 가지 사례분석을 통해 현대적 재주술화를 규명하고자 한다. 이를 위해 논의대상을 크게 두 범주로 나누어 진행하였는데, 1부에서는 주술적 상상력의 문제를 ‘변성’ (transformation)과 ‘초월성(transcendence)’이라는 두 가지 핵심주제로 구분하여 각 개념의 의미와 특성을 파악한다. 본 연구의 첫 번째 이슈인 ‘변성’(transformation)의 논의에서는 영국 인류학자 제임스 조지 프레이저의 황금가지 (The Golden Bough, 2005)에 나오는 ‘공감주술(sympathetic magic)’ 원리를 적용하여 사물이 초자연적사물로 변신하는 방식과 그 변신체가 담지하는 환상의 세계에 대한 이해를 시도한다. 본 연구의 두 번째 이슈인‘초월성’(transcendence)에 대한 접근에서는 빅터 터너의 통과의례 (rites of passage, 1996, 2005)에 제시된‘리미널리티’(liminality) 개념이 활용된다. 2부에서는 앞 단계에서 도출된 주술적 상상력의 두 핵심요소들이 현대 디지털 미디엄을 활용한 공연예술작품에어떤 방식으로 구현되고 있는지를 세 종류의 공연예술 작품들의 사례분석을 통해 살펴본다. 디지털미디어로 구현된환상성에 주술적 상상력의 특성인 ‘변성’이 잘 반영되어 나타나는 a) 클라우스 오버마이어(Klaus Obermaier)의<봄의 제전>(Le Sacre Du Printemps), 그리고 사이버공간이 부각된 텔레마틱적 음악공연(telematic concert) 사례로 b) 에릭 휘태커(Eric Whitacre)의 라이브 가상 합창단(virtual choir)의 실황 퍼포먼스와 c) 서로 다른장소에 있는 공연자들이 네트워킹으로 실시간 합주를 펼치는 <레조네이션스>(ResoNations)가 바로 그것이다.

영문 초록

This study is to examine how magical thoughts, which had a profound influence on the spiritual world in the pre-literary era, manifest themselves in today’s digital media and their new meanings in the 21stcentury. The characteristics of magical imagination and the correlation between magicality and digitalmedia are discussed. How magical thoughts find their place in the modern digital medium is illustrated with various case analyses. The discussion is divided into 2 parts. Part 1 focuses on the two underlying concepts of transformation and transcendence in magical imagination. Based on social anthropologist James George Fraser’s “sympathetic magic” in his publication The Golden Bough, it describes how certain things are transformed into supernatural things and the fantasy world in which the transforming body carries. Based on another cultural anthropologist Victor Turner’s “liminality” in his publication Rites of Passage, it explains how things are transcend from one dimension into another. In Part 2, three examples of performing arts illustrate how magical imagination take place through digital media: Klaus Obermaier’s interactive real-time generated stereoscopic dance and music “Le Scare Du Printemps”, Eric Whitacre’s live performance with virtual choir, and “ResonNations” which was played by musicians from different locations remotely.
