국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 영화 <케빈에 대하여>에서 잔혹한 범죄자인 케빈과 그의 어머니의 삶에 주목하여 인간 본성을 탐색하는데 있다. 연구대상은 린 램지의 <케빈에 대하여>라는 영화로, 영화 속에서 주인공 케빈이 왜 잔혹한살인을 저질렀으며, 엄마인 에바와 아들을 어떻게 사랑했어야 했을까의 의문에 답을 구하려는 연구 방법에 집중하였다. 타인의 고통에 공감하지 못하는 케빈과 그를 힘겹게 키워야 하는 엄마 에바의 관계를 통해서 인간의 본성에 대한 근본적인 의문을 갖게 되었다. 구체적으로 범죄자는 왜 범죄자가 되는가에 답을 찾고자 하였다. 개인의삶은 가정과 사회와 깊은 관련을 갖는다. 이 영화는 악마가 되어버린 아들 케빈과 엄마 에바 간의 유대 형성에 집중하여, 왜 이 둘 간에 사랑이 어그러졌는가를 통해 케빈을 이해하고, 그의 범죄 동기를 밝히고자 하였다. 허쉬는현대 사회에서 인간이 범죄를 왜 저지르는가에 주목하였다. 본 연구는 허쉬의 범죄 원인론을 중심으로 케빈의 범죄행위의 원인을 분석하고, 그의 삶에 대하여 이해하고자 하였다. 아이가 부모와 친밀한 유대를 형성하는 일은 아이가 이상적이고 합리적인 ‘보통 인간’으로 성장하는 데 큰 역할을 한다. 케빈의 범죄는 개인의 본성, 사회적 환경, 그리고 부모의 역할에 영향을 받은 일이다. 케빈은 부모와 대상항상성을 경험하지 못했고, 타고난 공격성과 파괴성이 자기 삶의 동력이 되어 사회적인 갈등을 야기시키고 자신을 파멸에 이르게 했다. 인간은 어린 시절에 올바른자아통제력과 사회화 과정을 경험함으로써 인간의 이기적이고 악마적인 본성을 조절할 수 있어야 한다. 연구의 결론으로 볼 때, 이 영화는 아이에 대한 부모의 상호작용적인 노력이 선천적으로 범죄 성향이 강한 아이를 보호할수 있는 방식이라고 주장하고 있다. 이런 부모의 노력과 아이 스스로의 자각이 아이를 보다 이성적이고 합리적인‘보통 인간’으로 살아가게 할 것이다. 따라서 현대 사회를 살고 있는 우리는 모두, 어린 시절의 아이가 부모와 친밀한 유대를 형성하고 이상적이고 합리적인 인간으로 성장할 수 있는 바탕을 이루는데 관심을 기울여야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore human nature by paying attention to the lives of Kevin, a cruel criminal and his mother appearing in the movie, We Need to Talk About Kevin. This study attempted to get the answer for the questions such as why the protagonist Kevin committed a cruel murder, and how Eva, the mother should have loved her son. The relationship between Kevin, who cannot sympathize with the pain of others, and his mother, Eva, who has to raise him, has raised fundamental questions about human nature. Specifically, this study tried to find an answer to why the criminals became the criminals. Personal life is deeply related to the family and society. This movie focused on the formation of a bond between his son Kevin who became a demon and his mother Eva, and attempted to understand Kevin through why the love fell apart between the two, and to reveal his motive for crime. Hirschi noted why humans commit crimes in modern society. This study attempted to analyze the causes of Kevin’s criminal behavior, focusing on Hirschi’s theory of crime, and understand his life. The child’s close ties with their parents play a big role in helping the child grow into an ideal and rational ‘ordinary human’. Kevin’s crime is influenced by his personal nature, his social environment, and his parents’ parental role. Kevin never experienced object constancy with his parents, and his innate aggression and destructiveness became the driving force of his life, causing social conflict and destroying himself. Human beings must be able to control their selfish and demonic nature by experiencing the correct self control and socialization process in their childhood. The movie argues that the parents’ interactive efforts toward the child are a way to protect a child who is inherently criminal. These parental efforts and the child’s self awareness will make the child more rational and reasonable as a ‘ordinary human’. Therefore, all of us living in modern society should pay attention to the foundation on which childhood children can form close ties with their parents and grow into ideal and rational human beings.
