드라마 <불가살>에 나타난 요괴 서사의 양상과 의의

국문 초록

본고는 2021년 12월 18일부터 2022년 2월 6일까지 tvN에서 방영한 16부작 드라마 <불가살>을 대상으로 요괴서사의 양상과 의의를 고찰하였다. 먼저 주연 요괴인 세 불가살의 관계와 서사를 구체적으로 파악하여, 두 가지성격의 경계에 있는 불가살의 형상에 대해 살펴보았다. 그리고 조연인 다섯 요괴의 서사 분석을 통해, 인간이 될수 있는 자격의 문제에 대해 구체적으로 밝혔다. 요괴 서사의 측면에서 바라본 드라마 <불가살>의 성과는 크게 두 가지로 규정할 수 있다. 첫째, 전통의 요괴들을 독창으로 변주하여 한국적 요괴 캐릭터의 모형을 정립하였다. 둘째, 요괴도 한국인 특유의 정서인 한(恨)을 가질 수 있다는 설정으로 요괴와 인간을 일직선상에서 바라보았다. 한편 <불가살>은 두 가지 한계도 지니고 있다. 첫째, 인물 관계가 매우 복잡하게 구성되어 있어 서사의 이해가어렵다. 둘째, 남녀 주인공의 로맨스가 자연스럽게 녹아들지 않아 극의 몰입을 방해한다. 그럼에도 <불가살>은 숨겨져 있던 한국 토종의 요괴들에 대한 매력을 알리고 흥미를 불러일으킨 전통 판타지 요괴물로써 가치가 크다.

영문 초록

This study examined the characteristics and significance of the monster narrative in the 16- episode drama , which aired on tvN from December 18, 2021 to February 6, 2022. First, the relationship and narrative of the three Bulgasals, the leading monsters, were explored in more detail, as was the shape of the Bulgasals on the boundary between the two personalities. Additionally, the issue of what qualifies a monster to become a human was revealed through narrative analysis of the five supporting monster characters. From the standpoint of monster narratives, presents two distinct achievements. First, a Korean monster character model was designed by creatively transforming folkloric monsters. Second, with the setting that monsters can also have the Korean-specific emotion, Han( ), it drew a parallel between monsters and humans. On the other hand, has two limitations. First, the narrative is hard to understand because the relationship between the characters is extremely complex. Second, the romance between the male and female protagonists does not flow naturally, hindering the audience’s concentration. Nonetheless, as a fantasy drama featuring folklore mythical creatures, is highly significant in that it generated interest and brought to light the hidden beauty of native Korean monsters.
