The Impact of Online English Video Presentation Activity on University Students English Proficiency

국문 초록

목적 본 연구에서는 영어 프레젠테이션 강좌를 수강하는 대학생을 대상으로 영어 동영상 발표가 영어 능숙도에 미치는 효과에 관하여 고찰하였다. 방법 경기도 소재 대학생 27명을 대상으로 영어 동영상 발표에 관한 대학생들의 인식을 고찰하기 위해 사전, 사후 설문조사를 실시하였다. 설문조사 내용은 영어 발표에 대한 자신감, 흥미도, 불안감, 성취감, 영어의 유창성, 동영상 제작 기술 보유 능력 및 동료 학생들과 발표 동영상 공유 시 느끼는 불편함의 여부를 묻는 질문으로 구성하였다. 또한, 대학생들의 영어 동영상 발표가 영어 능력 향상에 미치는 효과를 측정하기 위해 8주차에 중간고사 대체 영어 동영상 프레젠테이션과 15주차에 기말고사 대체 영어 동영상 프레젠테이션을 실시하여 세 명의 영어 교육 전문가가 5개의 평가 기준 (어휘 사용 능력, 유창성, 문법, 발음, 발표내용 구성능력)으로 영어 발표 동영상을 평가하였다. 결과 학생들은 학기 초에 비하여 학기 말에 영어 발표에 대한 자신감을 갖게 되었고 동영상 발표 제작 기술이 향상되었으며 동료 학생들과 자신의 발표 동영상을 기꺼이 공유하고자 하는 열린 마음을 갖게 된 것으로 조사 결과 밝혀졌다(t=-4.287, p=0.00). 또한, 중간고사 및 기말고사 대체 발표 동영상에서 중간고사에서는 총점 25점 만점에 15.9점을 획득하였고 기말 동영상 발표에서는 평균 점수가 18.6점으로 학생들의 영어 발표 능력점수가 2.7점 향상되었다. 영어 발표 능력 세부 항목별 평가 결과를 살펴보면 어휘 사용 능력, 유창성, 발음 영역에서는 학생들의 언어 능력이 약간 향상한 반면, 전반적인 영어 발표 내용의 구성 능력은 크게 향상되었다(t=-2.434, p=0.17). 결론 영어 비디어 동영상 발표는 학생들에게 영어 발표에 대한 불안감을 덜어 주었고 자신감을 향상시켰으며, 더불어 영어 능숙도 및 발표 능력에도 효과적인 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

Objectives This research aimed to ascertain the effectiveness of the English video presentation activities on university student learning. Methods The study involved 27 students, all of whom were enrolled in a general English course at a university in Gyeonggi-do. As part of their class requirements, they were required to prepare and deliver presentations, and were given the opportunity to participate in two surveys, pre- and post-surveys, the purpose of which was to assess any changes in English performance and attitude as a result of the video presentation activity. The survey targeted level of confidence, interest, anxiety, sense of achievement, English fluency, improvement in video production skills, and willingness to share their presentation videos with fellow classmates. In addition, in order to measure the students’ degree of improvement in English proficiency through the semester, two video presentations were prepared and delivered, one in week 8, as part of their midterm exam, and another in week 15, as part of their final exam. These two presentations were collected and evaluated by three raters based on the five criteria (vocabulary, fluency, grammar, pronunciation, and organization). Results The students experienced an increase in confidence levels and revealed greater flexibility. They also showed improvement in their video production skills at the end of the semester compared to the beginning. Moreover, they manifested a greater willingness to share their presentation videos with their fellow students (t=-4.287, p=0.00). The average score of the mid-term video presentation exam was 15.9 out of 25 and the average score of the final video presentation exam was 18.6 points. Taking each evaluation criteria in consideration, it is clear that the students English language ability improved. In terms of their choice of vocabulary, fluency, and pronunciation, there was a slight improvement. However, in terms of the structure and content, and their overall performance through the presentation process, there was a significant improvement (t=-2.434, p=0.17). Conclusions The English video presentation activity benefited the students considerably. It helped relieve the anxiety they previously had toward English presentations. It also boosted their confidence and enhanced their English proficiency and presentation skills in general.
