초등교사의 자녀에 대한 영어 교육 인식 및 교육 방식에 관한 민족지학적 연구

국문 초록

목적 본 연구는 미취학 아동 및 초등학생 자녀를 둔 초등학교 교사들의 자녀 교육 목표와 조기 영어교육에 대한 인식 및 자녀 영어교육 방식을 알아보고자 하였다. 방법 이를 위하여 인천, 서울 지역에 근무하며 미취학 어린이 또는 초등학생들을 자녀로 두고 있는 6명의 초등교사들을 대상으로 민족지학적 연구를 실시하였으며 1년 간 참여자를 관찰하거나 인터뷰하여 교사들의 영어 교육에 대한 인식 및 영어교육 실천 방식을 언어사회학적 관점에서 분석해 보았다. 결과 참가자들은 자녀들의 영어교육 목적에 대해 다양한 반응을 보여 주었으며 영어를 좋아했으면 좋겠다는 일반 학부모들이 설정한 단기적이고 막연한 목표와는 대비되는 구체적인 목표 의식을 보여주었다. 최근 가장 논란이 되고 있는 조기 영어교육 대한 인식에 있어서는 찬성과 반대의 입장으로 대립되어 나타나고 있었으나 대부분은 영어를 일찍 시작하는 것이 효과적이라고 여기고 있었다. 학교 영어교육에 대한 인식은 참가자들 모두 공교육 질에 대해서는 큰 불만이 없었으나 공교육 시수는 외국어 교육에 충분하지 않다는 입장을 보였으며 따라서 사교육이 불가피하다는 의견이 많았다. 결론 참가자들은 영어의 발음과 유창성의 측면에서 국제어(lingua franca)로서의 영어를 표방하는 최근의 경향에 반하는 인식과 태도를 보여서 영어 교육자적인 견지에서 그들의 정체성을 다시 재고해볼 필요가 있음을 보여주었다. 또한 영어교육에 관한 그들의 구체적인 목표 설정은 부모의 직업 및 경제적 위치가 자녀들의 영어교육에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 교육적 계층 심화를 야기할 수 있는 가능성이 있음을 보여주어서 그들의 교육적 사회적 역할에 대한 모순과 이중성이 있음을 시사한다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purpose of this study was to investigate the educational goals of children of preschoolers and elementary school children, their perceptions of early English education, and their children s English education practices. Methods For this purpose, an ethnographic study was conducted on 6 elementary school teachers who worked in Incheon and Seoul and had preschool children or elementary school children as their children. Participants were observed or interviewed for one to two years to analyze teachers perceptions of English education and their practice of English education from a linguistic sociological perspective. Results The participants showed various reactions to the purpose of their children s English education, showing a specific sense of purpose in contrast to the short-term and vague goals set by general parents who wished they liked English. In terms of their perception, there were opposing positions in favor and opposition, but most thought that it was effective to start English early. Regarding the perception of school English education, all the participants did not have any major complaints about the quality of public education. Conclusions In terms of pronunciation and fluency of English, the participants showed awareness and attitude against the recent trend of advocating English as an international language (lingua franca), suggesting that they need to reconsider their identity from the standpoint of English educators. In addition, their specific goal setting regarding English education shows that the occupational and economic position of parents has the potential to cause a deepening of the educational class that can affect children s English education, thereby contradicting and duplicity of their educational and social roles.
