핀란드, 미국, 한국 학생의 기대교육포부 수준과 학업성취도의 관계: 부모의 SES 집단 비교를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구는 저성취 학생이 많은 한국의 상황을 이해하기 위해, 핀란드, 미국, 한국 학생들의 기대교육포부 수준이 부모의 SES 높고 낮음에 따라 어떻게 달라지는지 알아보고자 하였다. 국가 간 비교를 하기 위해 2018년 PISA 자료의 응답자료를 활용하였으며, 분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 핀란드, 미국, 한국의 학업성취도의 차이는 각국의 복지 체제와 교육에 대한 사회적 태도에 기반하고 있음을 발견하였다. 핀란드의 높은 학업성취는 사회민주주의적 복지 시스템과 교육 기회의 평등에 기인하고, 미국의 자유주의 시스템은 교육불평등과 낮은 학업성취를 가져왔다. 둘째, 3개 국가 모두에서 기대교육포부 수준이 높은 학생들의 학업 성취도가 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 핀란드, 미국, 한국에서는 부모의 SES가 높은 집단의 학생들이 기대교육포부 수준이 부모의 SES가 낮은 집단의 학생들보다 높았으며, 기대교육포부 수준은 학업성취도에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 국가 간 학생들이 갖는 기대교육포부와 학업성취도의 관계에 대한 이해를 높이고, 부모의 SES가 학생의 기대교육포부에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 확인함으로써, 국내 교육 및 사회 복지 정책 결정에 도움이 되는 정보를 제공한다는 점에서 의의를 가진다.

영문 초록

This study attempted to find out how the level of educational ambition of students in Finland, the United States, and Korea varies depending on the high and low SES of parents in order to understand the situation in Korea, where the number of low-achievement students is increasing, and the overall decline in academic achievement in the recent PISA academic achievement evaluation. To this end, the response data of PISA data in 2018 were used, and analysis was conducted using STATA 14. The analysis results are as follows: First, the disparities in academic achievement among Finland, the United States, and South Korea demonstrate a correlation with each nation's welfare system and societal attitudes towards education. Finland's high level of academic success is attributed to its social-democratic welfare system and the egalitarian nature of educational opportunities, whereas the liberal system of the United States has resulted in educational inequality and lower levels of achievement. Second, students with a high level of educational aspirations showed higher academic achievement reaffirming the results of previous studies that educational aspirations positively affect students’ motivation and are related to academic achievement. Third, in Finland, the United States, and Korea, students in the group with high parents’ SES were higher than those with low levels of educational aspirations, and the level of educational aspirations had a more significant impact on academic achievement. Students with low parental SES are likely to perceive their future success as low and neglect their efforts to study. This study is meaningful in that it enhances understanding of the relationship between educational aspirations and academic achievement among countries, compares the impact of parents' SES on students' educational aspirations and academic achievement, and provides essential information to help determine domestic education and social welfare policies.
