비판적 사고력 강화를 위한 교양 영어 수업 사례

국문 초록

본 연구는 학습자의 비판적 사고능력의 향상을 기대하고, 이를 실현하기 위한 실천적인 방안으로서 교양 영어 수업과 관련한 수업 사례를 제시하고자 한다. 연구 참여자는 본 연구자의 교양영어 수업을 수강한 36명의 학생들로 학년과 전공에 무관하게 구성되었다. 연구 과정은 크게 세 단계로 진행되었다. 1단계는 핵심 용어와 의미 파악, 명확한 개념 정립을 위한 준비 단계이며, 2단계는 청취와 독해를 통해 내용에 대한 이해와 전체적 글의 전개 구도에 대한 이해 단계이다. 마지막 단계는 학생들이 중심이 되는 토론을 통해 글의 내용을 정리하고 나아가 이를 자신의 생활에 적용해보는 단계로 이어진다. 본 연구에서 사용된 주제는 ‘불법 다운로드’에 관한 것이었으며, 학생들의 토론은 다음과 같은 세 가지 입장으로 정리된다. 긍정적 입장은 경제 약소국의 입장에서 바라본 것으로 한류 전파에도 긍정적 효과를 초래한다고 하는 입장이다. 부정적 입장에서는 단순히 ‘불법’을 문제시할 뿐 아니라 해결 방안도 제시한다. 중도적 입장에서는 불법이므로 제재를 당연시하면서도, 그 정도가 개인의 창작의 자유를 침해하지 않아야 한다고 제한적 태도를 취한다. 본 연구를 통해 비판적 사고력을 향상시키는 효과적인 교양 영어 수업의 필요성을 보여주었다. 이는 학습자들로 하여금 다양한 문화 정보를 영어를 통해 수용하되, 그들의 시각이 객관적이고 독립적이 되도록 교수자가 수업을 계획하고 수행해야 한다는 점을 시사하고 있다

영문 초록

This research demonstrates a teaching case of a general English course designed to enhance learners critical thinking skills. Thirty-six students, with no limitations on majors and class years, enrolled in the researcher s class and participated in the study. There were three phases in the study, as follows. The first phase was preparation. Its purpose was to clarify key words and their meanings, as well as to comprehend concepts precisely. The second phase focused on understanding the reading passage. Its purpose was to recognize the content and general structure of the reading passage through listening and reading. The final phase was adaptation, in which the learners summarized what they learned through debate and by application to their daily lives. The topic used in the study was illegal downloading. Learners showed three different perspectives on the topic, as follows. Those with a positive view of illegal downloading saw benefits to countries that are weak economically and to the Korean Wave. Those with a negative view focused not only on the word illegal, but also on finding a solution to illegal downloading. Finally, learners who were neutral pinpointed a need for balance between personal creative freedom and the regulation of illegal practices. This study s results demonstrate a clear need to enhance learners critical thinking skills in English. In addition, it suggests some implications of providing various cultural information to learners. Teachers should plan English classes and foster learning environments in which students develop objective and independent perspectives.
