국외 한국어 교육 현장의 성취도 평가에서 학습자 모국어 사용의 역할

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 미국 대학교의 한국어 수업 성취도 평가에서 학습자 모국어가 어떤 역할을 하고 있는지 그 특징을 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 총 6개 미국 대학교의 한국어 수업을 대상으로 자료를 수집하였다. 2018년 봄 학기와 가을 학기의 초급 한국어 수업을 대상으로 시험 자료를 수집하였으며, 성취도 평가의 듣기, 읽기, 쓰기 영역을 중심으로 분석하였다. 각 영역별 두드러진 특징을 기술했으며, 지시문에서의 영어 사용과 번역을 활용한 문항의 특징에 대해 자세히 살펴보았다. 이러한 분석 결과를 외국어 평가의 다섯 가지 원리(Brown, 2006)에 빗대어 학습자 모국어를 어떻게 효과적으로 활용할 수 있는지에 대해 제언하였다. 평가의 모든 과정에서 학습자 모국어를 효율적으로 활용한다면 실용도와 신뢰도 모두 확보할 수 있을 것이다. 그리고 수업 중 학습자 모국어를 활용하는 해외 한국어 교육 현장에서 성취도 평가의 타당도를 확보하기 위해서는 평가 중 학습자 모국어 사용은 매우 중요한 요인으로 보인다. 다만 이러한 문항들은 실제 언어 사용과 다소 거리가 있기 때문에 진정성이 부족할 것이라는 제한점이 있다. 하지만 성취도 평가에서의 학습자 모국어 사용은 여러 방면에서 장점을 갖고 있으며 활용할 가치가 있음을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of how the learner s native language is being used in the Korean language achievement test at Universities in the United States. To that end, the study collected data on Korean language classes at a total of 6 U.S. universities. It is targeted at beginner Korean classes in spring and fall semester of 2018 and analyzed based on listening, reading and writing sections of the achievement test. It described the outstanding features of each section and examined the features of the ‘Question using English in instructions’ and ‘Question using Translation’ in detail. The results of these analyses were suggested in the five principles of foreign language assessment(Brown, 2006) on how to effectively utilize the learner s native language. The efficient use of the learner s native language throughout the assessment will ensure both practicality and reliability. The use of learners mother tongue during evaluations is a very important factor in order to ensure the validity of the achievement test in overseas Korean language classes that utilize learners mother tongue in class. There is a limitation that these questions will lack practicality because they are somewhat different from actual language usage. However, the result analyzed confirmed that the use of the learner s native language in Korean language education has advantages in many ways and is worthwhile to use.
