국문 초록

본 논문은 제2외국어 교실에서 상대적, 절대적 평가 정책이 어떻게 적용되는지를 중심으로 두 가지 평가 정책의 본질적 특성을 탐구한다. 좀 더 구체적으로 말하자면 한국 대학의 교양 영어 프로그램은 개별 기관의 행정적 필요성에 따라 상대평가에 편중되어 있다. 하지만 두 평가제도의 장단점에 대한 조사는 SLA 이론 내의 언어 학습 목표와 학생 동기부여 요소, 그리고 대학의 교양 영어 프로그램의 목표 면에서 교양 영어 프로그램에 상대평가제도를 사용하는 것은 적합하지 않다는 것을 궁극적으로 보여준다. 절대 평가제도가 앞서 말한 3가지 측면에서 더욱 유리한 방법인 것으로 나타난다. 그리하여 한국 대학에서 시행할 수 있는 계획을 제안한다. 이 계획은 절대 평가제도의 결함을 줄이기 위해 객관적인 평가 기준에 초점을 맞춘 연구를 이용하였다. 따라서 한국 대학 내 교양 영어 프로그램의 등급산정 정책을 전반적으로 재검토하고 현대화하여 절대 평가를 표준적 관행으로 반영하면 고등 교육 기관에서 학생들이 문화적 및 사회적으로 세계화 시대에 대비할 수 있도록 하는 현재의 요구를 충분히 충족시킬 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper explores the essential characteristics of relative and absolute grading policies with an emphasis on how they are applied in second language classrooms. More specifically, Freshmen English programs in Korean universities are partial to relative grading based upon the administrative necessities of individual institutions. However, an inquiry into the benefits and disadvantages of both grading systems ultimately confirms a discrepancy in using relative grading in a language classroom due to the goals of language learning within Second Language Acquisition (SLA) theories, student motivational components, and the goals of Freshmen English programs at the tertiary level. It is observed that absolute grading is a more favorable method which adheres to the factors mentioned. A plan for implementation in Korean universities is proposed which draws on previous research on criteria for objective grading to reduce the imperfections of an absolute grading framework. Thus, an overall reexamination and modernization of grading policies in Freshmen English programs in Korean universities to incorporate absolute grading as a standard practice in grade assessment would fully comply with the current demands placed upon higher educational institutions culturally and socially to prepare students for a globalized world.
