한국 영어 듣기학습자를 위한 다양한 영어 실제(authentic) 자료 보통속도 연구

국문 초록

목적 본 연구에서는 영어 듣기 수업에서 필요한 최근의 실제적인(Authentic) 자료로 다양한 장르의 발화 속도를 45년 전에 제시한 Primsleur 등의 보통 발화 속도(160~190 wpm)와 비교 분석하여 한국 고등학교에서 듣기 교육에 보통 속도가 활용되고 있는지 알아보고자 하였다. 방법 다양한 장르의 YouTube 자료 42개의 전체 분량 시간 기준 20% 이내(처음), 50% 이내(중간), 80% 이내(끝) 부분 각각의 1분에 해당하는 스크립트의 발화단어 수를 분석하였고, 예비 영어교사 22명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시한 뒤 SPSS 28 프로그램을 활용하여 빈도 분석하였다. 결과 다양한 장르의 평균 영어 발화 속도는 연설 (135wpm), 드라마 (141wpm), 토크쇼 (174wpm), 뉴스 (185wpm)순으로 나타났고 이는 비슷한 조건에서 뉴스 아나운서의 발화를 통해 측정한 보통 속도가 45년 동안 유지되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 더불어 설문조사를 통해서는 우리나라 영어 듣기 수업에서 보통 속도보다 느린 속도를 사용하여 학습자들이 실제 상황에서 영어 듣기의 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 결론 이와 같은 영어교실과 실제 영어 상황 사이의 속도 차이를 해결하려면 대학수학능력시험의 듣기 항목과 영어교실 모두에서 보통 속도를 활용한 듣기가 꾸준히 필요할 것이다.

영문 초록

Objectives Normal English speed is a core factor of characteristics of authentic spoken language; thus, its study is essential for teaching English listening. The purpose of this study is two fold: 1) To investigate English normal speed(160~190 wpm), which was claimed by Primsleur, et. al. 45 years ago; and 2) To find out whether normal speed is utilized in teaching of listening in Korean high schools. Methods To find out current normal English speed, we investigated 42 YouTube materials from varied genres. In addition, a survey was conducted with 22 prospective English teachers. Results The research findings on the speech rate for various genres are: speeches (135 wpm), dramas (141 wpm), talk shows (174 wpm), and news (185 wpm). We found out that the normal speed has been maintained for 45 years under similar conditions as measured by the news announcers' speeches. The survey reveals that slower than normal speed is utilized in English listening classes, which makes Korean learners of English experience difficulties in authentic situations. Conclusions Utilizing the normal speed is recommended on the Korean Scholastic Ability Test listening items and in the English classroom alike, to solve the speed gap between the English classroom in Korea and authentic situations in English.
