A teacher’s role in the academic socialization process of a group of international students in a Korean EFL classroom

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 한국 대학에서 공부하는 유학생 그룹의 학업 사회화 과정에서 교사의 역할을 탐구한다. 한 학기 동안 반 구조화 된 인터뷰, 수업 관찰 및 코스 문서를 통해 데이터를 수집했다. 참가 학생들은 중국, 베트남, 카자흐스탄, 필리핀, 우크라이나 출신이고, 초점 교사는 외국어로서 영어 (EFL) 과정에서 영어를 가르친 필리핀 출신의 영어 원어민이다. 본 연구는 한국으로 유학 온 학생의 학업 생활에서 교사의 중요한 역할과 교사의 정체성이 학생들의 학업 성공에 미치는 영향에 대해서 나타내고 있다. 연구 결과는 특히 유학생의 학업 사회화 과정에 영향을 미치는 요인은 다음과 분류하고 있다: 교사의 언어 지식 및 교육 경험, 학생에 대한 교사의 태도 및 유머러스한 교육 방식. 이 연구는 외국에서 유학생을 가르치는 교사들에게 몇 가지 교육학적 의미를 시사한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore a teacher’s role in the academic socialization process of a group of international students studying in a South Korean University. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, class observations and course documents during one academic semester. Data was collected between September 2018 to December 2018. Student participants were from China, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Philippine and Ukraine. The focal teacher was a native English speaker from Philippine who taught English in a Foreign Language (EFL) course. The factors from the current study showed the important role of the teacher in the international students’ academic lives in South Korea and ways the teacher’s identity contributed to the students’ academic success. The findings specifically revealed the following categories that influenced international students’ academic socialization process: teacher’s language knowledge and teaching experience, teacher’s attitude towards her students and her humoristic way of teaching. This study suggests a few pedagogical implications for teachers who teach international students in a foreign country.
