협동적 문맥활용 어휘학습의 효과에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 문맥활용 어휘학습을 협동 활동을 통해 하였을 때, 개별 활동보다 학습자의 영어 읽기 능력과 어휘학습에 대한 흥미, 자신감, 태도에 더욱 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 것이라는 가설을 검증하고자 하였다. 2019년 봄 학기의 14주간 동안 경기도 소 재의 한 대학에 재학 중인 2학년 대학생 56명이 본 연구에 참여하였으며 이들은 모두 교양필수로 영어를 수강하는 대학생들이었다. 이 중 26명의 대학생들은 문맥활용 어휘학습을 협동 활동을 통하여, 30명 대학생들은 개별학습 방법으로 문맥활용 어휘학습을 하였다. 자료 수집을 위해 사전, 사후 영어 읽기 능력 평가와 어휘학습에 대한 학습자의 흥미, 자신감, 태도의 변화를 사전, 사후 설문을 실시하여 알아보았다. 또한 협동 활동을 통해 문맥활용 어휘학습을 경험한 학습자를 대상으로 학습경험에 대한 학습자의 반응을 사후 설문과 개방형 질문을 통해 알아보았다. 자료 분석 결과, 협동학습을 통해 문맥활용 어휘학습을 한 학습자들이 개별학습을 한 학습자들보다 영어 읽기 능력에 더 큰 향상을 보였으며, 어휘학습에 대한 학습자의 흥미도, 자신감, 태도에서도 더욱 긍정적인 변화를 보였다. 본 연구는 단어의 뜻이나 철자를 단순히 암기하는 식의 지루하고 비효율적인 학습을 반복하는 현 한국 EFL 교수-학습에 효과적인 어휘학습의 한 수업모형을 제시하고 있음에 본 연구의 의의가 있다 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to see if cooperative vocabulary learning through guessing meanings of words using context clues has more positive effects on Korean EFL college students’ English reading proficiency and their interest, confidence, and attitudes than individual vocabulary learning through guessing meanings of words using context clues. The study was implemented for 14 weeks with fifty-six Korean university students during the spring semester of 2019. Twenty six participants experienced cooperative vocabulary learning through guessing meanings of words using context clues. Thirty students participated in the individual vocabulary learning through guessing meanings of words using context clues. In order to gather data, the following instruments were utilized: pre- and post- reading comprehension tests, pre- and postsurveys for the information about any changes in their interest, confidence, and attitudes, and post-questionnaire to get the information about participants previous vocabulary learning experiences. The results were as follows. First, cooperative vocabulary learning through guessing meanings of words using context clues showed more improvement than that of the individual learning group, which showed a statistical difference between the both. Second, cooperative learning group showed more positive improvement in their interest, confidence, and attitudes, which showed a difference statistically. This finding indicates that cooperative vocabulary learning through guessing meanings of words using context clues has a positive effect on Korean EFL college students’ reading comprehension proficiency and their interest, confidence, and attitudes. This study is significant in that it shows how college English classes using cooperative vocabulary learning through guessing meanings of words using context clues influence on students’ English vocabulary learning and gives some guidelines for effective English vocabulary teaching and learning.
