Telecollaboration through English as a Lingua Franca: Students’ Perceptions and Intercultural Communicative Competence

국문 초록

본 연구는 한국과 대만의 EFL 대학생 학습자간의 원격화상협력대화를 통해 한국 대학생들의 관점에서 문화간 의사소통능력 배양 가능성과 원격화상대화에 대한 그들의 전반적인 반응을 조사하였다. 원격화상대화 경험을 토대로 학생들이 작성한 반성적 에세이를 중심으로 대만 학생들과 주고받은 이메일, SNS 메세지와 녹음 대화 등을 참고하여 결과를 분석하였다. 특히, 학생들의 대화 중 나타난 문화간 의사소통능력의 증거를 찾기 위해서 Byram (1997)의 문화간 의사소통능력 모델을 사용하여 분석하였다. 대만 대학생들과 원격화상대화를 한 학기에 두 번 이상 진행한 학생들은 Byram (1997)이 그의 모델에서 제시한 모든 다섯까지 항목인 태도, 지식, 해석하고 관련짓는 기술, 발견 및 상호작용하는 기술, 비판적 문화인식 영역에서 문화간 의사소통능력을 보여 주었다. 특히, 이 중 지식 영역에서 학생들의 문화간 의사소통능력의 사용이 가장 많이, 인식 영역에서 가장 적게 나타났다. 또한, 학생들이 그들의 에세이에서 사용한 형용사를 중심으로 분석한 원격화상대화에 대한 반응은 대체로 흥미로운, 독특한, 감사한 등 긍정적이었지만, 어려웠다는 의견도 꽤 많았다. 마지막으로, 지금까지 원격협력대화는 목표 언어를 배우는 학생과 원어민 화자 사이에서 주로 이루어져왔다. 때문에, 본 연구는 영어가 이미 세계 공용어로 자리매김하고 있는 상황에서 비원어민 사이에 영어를 사용하여 이루어진 원격협력대화도 학생들의 문화간 역량에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있다는 것을 보여줬다는 점에서 외국어교육분야에 중요한 시사점을 줄 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영문 초록

The study investigated Korean EFL university students’ telecollaboration with Taiwanese EFL university students in which they used English as a lingua franca (ELF). The study investigated whether Korean students exhibit intercultural communicative competence during the exchange using Byram s (1997) intercultural communicative competence (ICC) model. The study also captured the Korean students’ reactions to and struggles during the exchanges. The students’ reflective essays served as a primary source of the data. The findings showed that various types of ICC from attitudes to critical cultural awareness had been exhibited in the participants’ reflective essays, thereby showing the potential to improve students ICC. Out of the five dimensions that comprise Byram’s ICC model, knowledge appeared the most in students reflections and critical cultural awareness appeared the least. The students also found the intercultural exchange to be a fun and beneficial experience for them, but they also found it quite challenging in terms of its linguistic, technological, and logistical aspects. Finally, the study’s findings provide reassuring evidence to the EFL/ESL field that telecollaborative exchanges between non-native speakers can be advantageous and have a positive impact on students pursuing intercultural learning when English is used as a lingua franca.
