국문 초록

본 연구는 오늘날 향교에서 소장하고 있는 일제강점기 문헌 자료에 대한 조사 현황을 살펴보고, 자료의 특징과 향후 자료보존을 위한 방안을 모색하고자 하는데 목적이 있다. 일제강점기 향교 자료는 조선후기 향교 자료와 마찬가지로 향교재산관련 문서와 유림들의 명단을 기록해 놓은 명부류도 여전히 많은 수를 차지하지만 관 간, 즉 중앙기관과 지방 향교 간, 지방 관리와 지방향교 직원(直員)에 오간 공문서류가 많이 남아있다는 점은 중요한 특징이다. 이들 공문서는 일제가 지방유림을 식민통치에 어떻게 활용하고 통제했는지에 대한 실상을 구체적으로 담고 있다는 점에서 일제강점기를 이해하는 데 중요한 사료라고 할 수 있다. 향교소장 근대 문헌자료의 조사와 보존을 위한 방안으로는 첫째, 근대 향교자료는 대부분이 일제강점기라는 시대적 배경 속에서 생산된 것이어서 드러내는 것을 불편해하는 인식 틀에서 벗어나 객관적인 사료로서 접근하는 인식의 전환이 필요하다. 둘째, 과거에 수행된 지역조사를 통해 발간된 각종 보고서나 자료집 등에서 파편적으로나마 조사된 자료의 현황 파악이 이루어져야 한다. 그리고 전국 향교를 대상으로 한 소장자료의 전수조사가 시급히 이루어져야 하며, DB가 구축되고, 관련 기초목록 및 자료를 소개한 해제집과 자료집 등의 발간이 서둘러 이루어져야 할 것이다. 셋째. 자료수집에 있어서 공간 및 조사 대상의 범주를 확대가 요구된다. 향교문서를 조사할 때에는 향교라는 공간에만 한정할 것이 아니라 전교, 장의, 재무, 유사 등 향교에서 활동했던 인사들과의 접촉을 통한 자료 수집 및 조사도 병행되어야 할 것이다. 또한 향교만이 아니라 박물관 등에 소장되어 있는 자료의 조사도 필요하다. 넷째, 향교소장 자료의 보존에도 관심을 기울여야 할 것이다. 근대 향교자료 보존의 중요성을 인식시킴과 동시에 지방 자치단체나 중앙 차원에서도 자료의 보존에 주의를 기울이도록 우리 학계에서도 노력해야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the current status of research on literature data from Japanese colonial era at Hyanggyo and to identify the characteristics of these data and explore ways to preserve it in the future. The data of Hyanggyo from the Japanese colonial era not only include documents related to the property of Hyanggyo and a list of Hyanggyo scholars. There are also many official documents that have been exchanged between the staff at the central institution and local Hyanggyo as well as between local officials and local Hyanggyo. These official documents are important for understanding the Japanese colonial era since they contain the specific facts on how Imperial Japan used and controlled local Hyanggyo in its colonial rule. To investigate and preserve the modern literature of the Hyanggyo, it is first necessary to approach modern Hyanggyo materials as an objective source of history and not as documents produced in the context of the Japanese colonial era. Second, it is necessary to understand the current status of data that has been partially investigated in various reports and data collections published in the past. In addition, a nationwide inspection of the collection of materials for Hyanggyo should be urgently conducted, DB should be established, and the release of books and materials introducing related data should be published. Third, the expansion of the area and categories of subjects of investigation is required. When investigating documents related to Hyanggyo, it should not be limited to the “space” of Hyanggyo. Data should also be investigated through contact with people who were active in Hyanggyo. It is also necessary to investigate the materials stored in museums and other places. Lastly, the preservation of the materials of Hyanggyo is needed.
