개항기 신문매체를 통해 본 19세기 말의 ‘의리(義理)’ 개념

국문 초록

의리 개념은 조선시대의 지배 이데올로기였던 성리학의 핵심 개념이었지만, 현대 한국사회에서는 부정적이거나 희화화되어 통용된다. 이러한 의미 사이의 간극은 근대로 이행하는 과정에서 의리 개념 또한 변화를 겪었음을 보여준다. 본 논문은 개념사 방법론을 적용해 개항기 신문 매체에 나오는 의리 개념의 분석을 시도해보았다. 이를 통해 먼저 19세기 말에 유교적 의리 개념이 확장되고 변용되는 사례를 확인할 수 있었다. 즉, 조선후기의 정치적 사건으로 충역시비가 일어나자 이를 봉합하고 왕위계승의 정통성을 세우기 위해 ‘정치의리’가 세워지면서 일종의 ‘정치화’가 이루어졌다. 또한 조선의 유일한 가치체계를 대표하는 의리 개념이 서구의 ‘신학문’과 비교되는 ‘상대화’ 경향도 확인할 수 있었다. 나아가 군주에 대한 충성을 확장시켜 국가에 대한 충성을 지향하거나, 춘추대의에 입각하여 의리 개념을 근대국제관계에 적용시키기도 하였다. 다음으로 의리 개념의 의미장 내에서 유교적 지향이 사라진 사례도 확인할 수 있었다. 개화를 정당화하기 위해 도리나 정의처럼 보편적인 가치를 끌어오고 있었다. 기독교와 관련된 기사에서는 유교적 의리 개념과 다른 맥락으로 재구성된 의리 개념을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 의리 개념 분석을 통해 19세기 말 의리 개념의 의미장은 다양한 형태로 변화하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히, 의리라는 언표는 성리학을 대표하는 핵심 가치였지만, 개항기에는 더 이상 유교적이지만은 않다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

The concept of “Uiri (義理)” was a key concept in Neo-Confucianism, which was the ruling ideology of the Joseon Dynasty, but it is used in modern Korean society negatively or as comedy. The gap between these meanings shows that the concept of Uiri has also changed in the process of modern transition. This paper applied conceptual history methodology to analyze the concept of Uiri in the newspaper media during the open port period. First, this study confirmed the expansion and transformation of the Confucian concept of Uiri at the end of the nineteenth century. In other words, a kind of “politicalization” occurred when a political dispute arose over the political incident of the late Joseon Dynasty, and a “political doctrine” was established to seal it and establish the legitimacy of the succession to the throne. In addition, the concept of Uiri representing the only value system of Joseon was compared to the “new studies” of the West, and the “relative” tendency was also confirmed. Furthermore, the concept of Uiri expanded to include loyalty to the monarch and even to the nation, and extended “the Confucian thought of righteousness (春秋大義)” to apply it to modern international relations. Second, we were able to identify cases in which Confucian values disappeared within the semantic field of the concept of Uiri. It was bringing about universal values, such as rights and justice, to justify enlightenment. In articles related to Christianity, the concept of Uiri, which was reconstructed in a different context from the concept of Confucian Uiri, could be identified. This analysis confirmed that the semantic field of the concept of Uiri in the late nineteenth century was changing in its forms. In particular, the declaration of Uiri was a key value representing Neo-Confucianism, but it was confirmed that it was no longer Confucian during the Open Port Period.
