국문 초록

이 글에서는 극단 신세계의 <망각댄스> 시리즈를 중심으로 현대공연예술의 전략과 미학적 윤리에 대해 고찰했다. 문화의 연극성이 발견되면서, 연극과 문화가 수행적 속성을 매개로 상호침투하며 퍼포먼스적 전환이라 할 수 있는 변화를 보여주고 있다. 이런 상황에서 일상의 의례를 포함하는 문화적 퍼포먼스의 성격을 공유하면서도, 그것의 위임된 수동성을 문제시하여 퍼포먼스의 수행적 실천을 환기하는 극단 신세계의 <망각댄스> 시리즈를 살펴보았다. 극단 신세계의 <망각댄스> 시리즈는 2014년의 세월호 참사를 다루는 장기 공연 프로젝트로, 2017년에 시작되어 대한민국의 주요 참사 현장에서 진행되고 있는 연작 시리즈이다. 일상을 통해 익숙해진 위임된 수동성을 문제시하며, 그것이 2014년 세월호 참사를 망각하도록 방조하는 메커니즘을 성찰한다. 주체적이고 능동적으로 선택되는 일상의 행동이 기실 위임된 수동적 행위일 수 있으며, 그것이 사회적 문제에 대한 망각과 닿아 있다는 점을 환기하기 위해 일상 자체를 퍼포먼스로 공연한다. 구체적으로 이는 극적 사건을 구성하거나 재현하여 참여자들의 공감을 강요하는 방식이 아니라, 일상과 닿아 있는 문화적 퍼포먼스의 메커니즘을 활용, 참여자들이 익숙한 일상을 직접 경험함으로써 스스로의 성찰에 이르도록 한다. 이 글에서는 이러한 내용을 공연된 일상과 전시된 일상으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 2018년에 마무리된 이동형 거리극인 <망각댄스> 시리즈에서는 일상에 스윙 댄스와 세월호 타임테이블과 같은 비일상적 퍼포먼스를 삽입함으로써 일상적 시간의 흐름을 지연시켜 망각된 것들에 대해 성찰케 했다. 일상과 퍼포먼스가 상호침투하며, 서로가 서로를 낯설게 만드는 전략이다. 2020년 <망각댄스-4.16편, 박제>편에서는 퍼포먼스의 형식이 이동형 거리극에서 전시극으로 바뀌고, 일상의 공간에 초점을 맞춰 퍼포먼스를 구성했다. 기억을 공간화하는 전략을 통해 익숙한 일상 안에서 참여자들 스스로 박제되어 망각된 기억을 떠올리도록 만들었다. 이를 통해 극단 신세계의 퍼포먼스가 자율적 예술에 그치지 않고, 새로운 “예술적 윤리학을 구성”하는 수행적 실천일 수 있음을 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

This study examined the strategy and aesthetic ethics of contemporary performing arts after the performance turn, focusing on the series of the theatre company Shinsegae. As the theatricality of culture has been discovered, theatre and culture show the change that can be called performance turn. In this situation, the series of the theatre company Shinsegae, which shares the characteristic of cultural performance including everyday rituals, but reverses its delegated passiveness and reminds the performance practice, was the subject of this article. The series of the theatre company Shinsegae is a long- term performance project that deals with the disaster of the Seowall incident in 2014. It started in 2017 and has been performed at major disaster sites in Korea until 2020. In a context that questions the delegated passiveness that is familiar in the everyday life, it shows a strategy to resist forgetting in order to remember the ‘sewol’ ship disaster in 2014. The daily behavior of the subjective and active choice can be passive delegated behavior, and it is in contact with the forgetting of social problems. To remind it, the daily life is performed in the series of the theatre company Shinsegae. Specifically, this is not a way to compose or reproduce dramatic events to force participants to sympathize with them, but a way to utilize the mechanism of cultural performance that representates daily life and allow participants to participate and experience them directly. In this article, I divided these contents into daily life to be performed and daily life to be displayed. In the series, a mobile street performance art that was completed in 2018, participants can reflect on the oblivion by delaying the flow of everyday time by inserting something non-daily into everyday things. It is a strategy that everyday life and performance penetrate each other and make each other unfamiliar. In 2020, , the form of performance changed from a mobile street performance art to an exhibition performance, and the performance was organized focusing on the space of everyday life. Through the strategy of spatializing memories, participants make themselves think of memories in familiar daily life. Through this, it was examined that performance of the theatre company Shinsegae can be a performative practice that does not only autonomous art but also constructs a new “artistic ethics”.
