『불교진흥회월보』의 전개와 문예 지면의 경향성

국문 초록

1910년대부터 해방 이전까지 간행된 한국의 근대 불교 잡지는 총 23종 430여 권이다. (신문포함, 일본어 잡지 제외) 초창기인 1910년대는 『조선불교월보』를 필두로 6종이 발행되었다. 이 가운데 본고는 『조선불교월보』, 『해동불보』에 이은 세 번째 잡지 『불교진흥회월보』를 대상으로 그 전개과정을 살피고 문예지면의 경향을 살펴보았다. 『불교진흥회월보』에는 「文藝」, 「雜俎」, 「小說」란을 두어 당시의 문예 창작의 성과를 다수 담아내었다. 「문예」란은 상량문, 중수기, 탑비 등 당시에 창작한 전통 불교문학의 양식을 수록하였다. 「잡조」란은 ‘雜錄’과 같은 의미로서, 흥미로운 이야기나 진기한 사건을 소개한 지면으로 異蹟談, 설화 등이 수록되어 있다. 「소설」란은 창작 서사물을 수록한 지면으로, 근대소설의 초기 작품과 講談 양식이 수록되어 있다. 「문예」란에 수록된 고승의 碑文, 법당의 上樑文, 한시 등은 비록 새로 창작되었다 하더라도 근대문학의 범위에서 논하기는 어려운 양식들이다. 그러나 이들 양식은 근대를 맞이해서도 보수적인 종교 영역에서는 이전 시대의 양식이 여전히 유효했던 사실을 드러내는 현상으로서 의의가 있다. 문학 창작에서 특기할 만한 작가는 양건식이다. 그의 강담 작품은 중국문학을 번안한 것으로 창작문학적인 의의는 크지 않으며, 그의 소설은 장르적으로 완성된 형태가 아닌 습작 수준의 것이다. 그러나 이들 서사물은 불교문화의 영역에서 이루어진 근대적 문화 창조의 한 현상으로서, 그리고 신구 교체기의 문학사적 변화를 잘 드러내는 현상으로서 의의가 있다. 전반적으로 『불교진흥회월보』의 문학 관련 지면은 근대와 전근대가 혼효된 20세기 초 불교 지성들의 문학, 문화적 활동 양상을 고스란히 전해주는 보고로서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

From the 1910s to the pre-liberation period, Korea has published 430 books in 23 different types of Buddhism magazines(including newspapers but excluding magazines written in Japanese). In the early 1910s, six editions were published, starting with Joseon Buddhism Monthly Magazine(朝鮮佛敎月報). Following Joseon Buddhism Monthly Magazine and Haedong Buddhism Newsletter(海東佛報), this study examines the development process of the third magazine(Buddhism Promotion Association Monthly Magazine [佛敎振興會月報]) and analyzes the trend of literature and arts pages. Buddhism Promotion Association Monthly Magazine contained many achievements of literature and arts creation at the time by placing the “literature and arts(文藝),” “stories(雜俎),” and “novels(小說)” columns respectively. The “literature and arts” column contains the styles of traditional Buddhism literature created at the time, such as framework-raising records(上樑文), restoration notes(重修記), and inscriptions(碑文). The “stories” column has the same meaning as “miscellaneous writings(雜錄),” and contains strange talks(異蹟談) and narratives as pages(誌面) that introduce interesting stories or rare(珍奇) events. The “novels” column is a page containing creative narratives, the early works of modern novels, and the style of lecture talk(講談). The high priest’s inscriptions(碑文), the framework-raising records(上樑文) of Buddhist sanctum(法堂), classical Chinese poetry, etc. contained in the “literature and arts” column, even if they were newly created, are styles that are difficult to discuss within the scope of modern literature. However, even in the modern era, these styles are useful data as they reveal the fact that the styles of the previous era were still valid within the scope of conservative religion. Yang Geon-shik is a remarkable writer in literary creation. His lecture-talk works are an adaptation of Chinese literature, and the significance of his creation is small. In addition, the modern novels that he built are not yet genre-completed but are at the level of learning. However, these narratives are significant as a phenomenon of the creation of modern culture in the realm of Buddhist culture and as a phenomenon that reveals the changes in literary history during the transition period between the old and the new. Overall, the “literature and arts” page of the Buddhism Promotion Association Monthly Magazine is significant in that it is a report that conveys the literary and cultural activities of Buddhist intellectuals in the early 20th century when the modern and the pre-modern were mixed.
