국문 초록

이 글은 최정희 소설에 드러난 모성회귀, 여성인물의 욕망의 추구와 갈등, 좌절의 서사가 동시대를 살아가던 신여성들의 현실적 삶의 조건과 어떻게 관련되어 있는지를 사회문화적 맥락에서 분석한다. 구체적으로는 최정희의 해방 전 작품 중 모성회귀 서사가 두드러진 대표작 「인맥」과 「환영」을 통해 현모양처 담론이 강화되었던 1930-40년대 식민지 현실에서 욕망과 현실 사이에서 내적 충돌을 경험하고 있었던 지식인 여성의 내면을 분석하고, 「천맥」, 「지맥」, 「흉가」의 여성인물을 중심으로 1930~40년대 근대교육을 받은 여성들이 겪어야 했던 경제적 곤란의 양상을 살펴본다. 최정희의 초기 소설에는 1930-40년대에 활동한 2세대 신여성의 경험과 자의식이 반영되어 있다. 이 시기의 대표작에 공통적으로 드러나는 신여성의 낭만적 사랑, 섹슈얼리티의 추구와 좌절의 서사는 여성의 자기구성 욕망이 가부장적 사회에서 거부되어 현실에 순응함으로써 현모양처의 미덕을 내면화하는 좌절의 과정을 보여준다. 산업화된 도시는 여성의 성을 상품화하는 한편, 낭만적 사랑의 실현을 통한 자유연애를 성적 문란함과 도덕적 타락으로 이미지화함으로써 여성의 욕망은 통제담론의 대상이 되었다. 최정희 소설 「인맥(人脈)」, 「지맥(地脈)」,「천맥(天脈)」, 「환영(幻影)」 등은 근대적 여성주체로서의 의식을 부정할 수밖에 없는 여성의 현실을 그려냄으로써, 자신의 주체적 삶을 추구하고자 한 당대 지식인 여성들이 겪어야 했던 현실문제와 내적 혼란을 보여준다. 그녀의 소설에 나타나는 이른바 “자궁의 슬픈 운명”이라는 운명론적 체념은 여성주체로서의 욕망을 끊임없이 부정당하는 현실적 고뇌를 반영한 것이라 하겠다.

영문 초록

The objective of this paper is to examine the issue of identity in women’s literature during the colonialperiod , focusing on the novels by Choi Jung-Hee. As the Japanese militarist colonial rule strengthened in the 1930s and 40s, women’s education focused on producing “mothers who could nurture new leaders of the empire.” Accordingly, female sexuality and uniqueness was frowned upon and even repressed. However, many female writers embraced the freethinking, individualist female consciousness popularized by the “new females” a generation earlier during the time when Choi Jung-Hee was actively writing. However, female scholars in the 1930s and 40s were forced to live in a reality that was alienated from this ideal. The increasing industrialization and urbanization of this period required the increased participation of females in society. For economic reasons, females became more active in the public sphere and, as a result, were forced to adjust to patriarchic order and patriarchic way of thinking. Choi Jung-Hee’s novels present the concerns and conflicts facing female scholars during this period, especially the conflict between female sexuality and motherhood. Although most characters in Choi’s novels seem to give in to the expectations of motherhood, what we are actually witnessing is the image of “patriarchic femininity” being destroyed. This paper identifies how Choi’s unique “femininity” appears in her novels and examines the relationship between colonial female scholars’ view on real world issues and female consciousness.
