중학생의 자존감, 자기통제 및 학업성취도의 종단적 변화

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 서울교육종단연구(SELS)의 4차년도(2013년)부터 6차년도(2015년)까지의 응답자료를 사용하여 중학교 1학년부터 3학년까지 자존감, 자기통제, 학업성취도의 변화를 각각 알아보는 한편, 긍정적인 자기평가와 관련된 자존감, 자기통제의 성장요인들이 학업성취도에 미치는 직ㆍ간접적인 효과를 확인하였다. 다변량 잠재성장모형의 검증 결과 자존감과 자기통제의 변화율이 통계적으로 유의하지 않게 나타났고, 중1부터 중3까지 3시점에 걸쳐 상대적으로 안정적인 모습을 보였다. 반면, 학업성취도의 변화율은 정적으로 나타났고, 이에 학생들의 성취도가 매년 증가하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 성장요인들의 관계에서는 우선 긍정적 자기평가가 자존감에 정적인 영향을 주었고, 자존감의 초기값 역시 자기통제의 초기값을 정적으로 예측하였다. 또한 초기 자기통제 수준이 높은 학생들은 상대적으로 높은 학업성취도를 보였고, 간접효과의 분석결과 자존감이 자기통제를 거쳐 학업성취도에 미치는 매개효과는 유의하게 나타났다.

영문 초록

This study examined the changes of self-esteem, self-control, and academic achievement of middle school students in the 4th(year 2013) to 6th (year 2015) dataset of SELS (Seoul Education Longitudinal Study). We also investigated how growth factors (i.e. initial status and rate of change) of self-esteem and self-control would predict academic achievement directly and indirectly. Multivariate latent growth modeling was employed to analyze data. Results demonstrated that growth rates of self-esteem and self-control were not statistically significant, meaning that self-esteem and self-control were stable over time from first to third years of middle school. However, the growth rate of academic achievement was positively significant, meaning that students’ academic performance increased over time. Positive self-evaluation predicted 1st year’s self-esteem, which in turn, positively affected self-control. Students who had higher initial status of self-control were more likely to achieve better than students who had lower self-control. Lastly, the mediating effect of self-control between self-esteem and academic achievement was statistically significant in first year of middle school Theoretical and practical implications were discussed.
