고등학교 영어 듣기 지문의 Lexical Bundles 분석

국문 초록

본 연구는 2009 교육과정에 따른 영어 I, II 교과서와 수능, EBS 교재의 듣기 영역을 코퍼스로 구축하고, 교육과정의 의사소통 기능 예시문과의 비교를 통해 각 코퍼스에서의 lexical bundles 활용 양상을 알아보고, 연구 대상 코퍼스와 원어민 참조 코퍼스에 등장하는 4-gram lexical bundles 목록을 구축하여 그 기능들이 어떤 양상으로 분포되어 있는지 살펴보았다. 분석을 위해 WordSmith Tools와 AntConc 프로그램을 분석 도구로 활용하였다. 분석 결과, 높은 빈도로 등장하는 lexical bundles 30개의 의사소통 기능을 살펴보니, 영어 I 교과서에서는 ‘의지 표현하기’, ‘담화 구성하기’, ‘설득·권고하기’ 순이며, 영어 II는 ‘의지 표현하기’, ‘담화 구성하기’, ‘감정 표현하기’, 수능에서는 ‘설득·권고하기’, ‘의지 표현하기’, ‘정보 전달하기와 요구하기’, EBS 교재는 ‘의지 표현하기’, ‘정보 전달하기와 요구하기’, ‘설득·권고하기’ 순으로 빈도가 높았다. 또한 같은 lexical bundles라도 다른 의사소통 기능을 가지는 경우가 있었으며, 같은 기능의 lexical bundles라도 사용되는 맥락이나 상황에 따라 차이가 있었다. 연구 대상 코퍼스와 원어민 코퍼스의 lexical bundles의 기능을 비교·분석한 결과, 모든 연구 대상 코퍼스에서 stance 기능의 비율이 가장 높게 나타났으며, 연구 대상 코퍼스에서는 simple inquiry 기능이 상대적으로 높게 나타난 반면, 원어민 코퍼스에서는 referential 기능이 높은 비율을 보였다. 이에 따라 학생들의 의사소통 능력 향상을 위해서 교과서, 수능, EBS 연계 교재에서 의사소통 기능을 다룰 때 양과 질적인 균형, 상호 연관성을 확보할 필요성이 있다는 시사점을 얻었다.

영문 초록

This study aimed to examine the listening part of high school English textbooks, College Scholastic Ability Tests (CSATs), and EBS-CSAT books using lexical bundles and n-gram analysis. The lexical bundles in all dialogues and monologues in the textbooks, CSATs and EBS-CSAT books were analyzed using corpus tools. In addition, communicative functions in each corpus were analyzed comparing with those of the English National Curriculum. Through the n-gram analysis for each corpus and a native reference corpus, a list of 4-gram lexical bundles for each corpus was constructed respectively, and then the functions of the lexical bundles were compared. The results showed that the most frequent communicative functions from the three corpora were different from each other. However, the stance function was the most frequent function in all corpora. This study suggests reconsideration and wider application of communicative functions in the National Curriculum and a closer linkage among high school textbooks, CSATs and EBS-CSAT books in terms of communicative functions related to listening. More sophisticated studies and pedagogical applications of lexical bundles are also needed in future research.
