기악활동과 학업의 상호연관성

국문 초록

본 연구는 미국 아이비리그 대학에 재학 중인 한국 유학생들의 중·고등학교 기악활동과 학업에 대한 상호연관성을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 가설적 연구모형을 바탕으로 통계적 모형을 설정하였고, 한국 유학생 33명을 대상으로 설문조사와 회기분석을 실시였다. 그 결과 한국 학생들의 과거 중·고등학교 학창시절 자신의 기악활동 연습량은 그들이 인지한 학업성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤고, 학생들의 현재 기악활동 연습량에도 긍정적인 영향을 주었다. 또한 과거 기악활동과 학생들의 긍정적인 학업성과는 과거 기악활동에 대한 만족도뿐만 아니라, 현재 한국 중·고등학교 학생들의 기악활동에 대한 인식에서 긍정적인 영향을 미치고 있었다. 본 연구는 학생들의 기악활동과 학업에 대한 긍정적인 인식을 마련하였다는데 그 의의를 둔다.

영문 초록

The purpose of the study was to examine Korean students who applied to and attended Ivy League schools in the United States and their experiences playing musical instruments in Korean secondary school, including either middle school and/or high school. In 2016, thirty-three Korean students now attending Ivy League schools completed online surveys. They reported that they found their time practicing musical instruments while in secondary school helped their academic achievement in secondary school. In addition, they reported that their scholastic achievement was positively correlated with their satisfaction in playing their musical instruments in secondary high school. This degree of satisfaction in playing an instrument was in turn positively correlated with both their desire to recommend playing an instrument in school to current secondary school students and to their desire for the music curriculum in secondary schools to include some opportunity to play musical instruments. Finally, their reports of high scholastic achievement were positively correlated with their continued current practice and playing of their musical instruments. These results should encourage students, teachers, educational committees, and educational boards in charge of policy to recognize a positive relationship between school achievement and playing musical instruments in secondary school.
