국문 초록

본 연구는 최근 방송 및 음반 산업에서 디지털 콘텐츠 유통 환경에 적합한 오디오 마스터 표준으로 사용되기 시작한 라우드니스(Loudness)에 대한 개념 및 필요성을 고찰하고 이러한 개념이1990년대 이후 음반 산업의 큰 이슈였던 라우드니스 전쟁(Loudness War)이라 불리는 음압경쟁현상 속에서 어떠한 양상으로 적용되고 있는지 고찰해보며, 음반 산업의 초기부터 최근까지 발표된 팝 음악의 라우드니스 및 다이내믹 레인지에 대한 장르/연대별 추이를 실증적으로 고찰하는것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해, 1965년부터 2020년까지 빌보드 연말차트(Billboard Year-End Chart)의 No.1 싱글곡을 대상으로 미국의 음악 스트리밍 서비스 애플뮤직(Apple Music)에서 해당 음원을 추출하여Integrated LUFS, True Peak, LRA(Loudness Range), 순간 최대 라우드니스(Maximum Momen tary LUFS) 등의 변수를 스펙트럼 분석기 Insight 2.0로 측정하였으며 해당 측정값들의 연대별시계열 분석, 장르/연대별 분산분석, 장르 간 차이분석(t-test), 연대 간 분산분석(ANOVA)을 실시하였다. 시계열 분석 결과, 분석대상 음악의 라우드니스 레벨(LUFS)은 1980~90년대에 비하여 최근평균 30%정도 상승하였고 PLR값으로 측정한 라우드니스의 다이내믹 레인지 또한 25%이상 증가하였다. 그리고 LRA값은 2000년대까지 작아지다가 2010년대 이후 30% 커지면서 라우드니스관점의 다이내믹 레인지가 넓어지고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 분산분석 결과, 1980년대 이후 LUFS(Int.) 및 PLR의 분산 값이 지속적으로 작아지면서 음악라우드니스의 획일화 현상이 나타났으며 Pop장르의 경우 2010년 이후 라우드니스 분산 값 이다시 커지면서 라우드니스 획일화 정도가 완화되고 있다. 장르 간 차이분석 결과, LRA값을 제외한 나머지 라우드니스 관련 변수들에서 분석대상 두 장르간 차이가 없고 전체적으로 비슷한 추세를 보이는 것으로 나타났고 연대 간 차이분석 결과LUFS(Int.), True Peak, PLR, Max. Momentary LUFS 값이 연대별로 유의미하게 달라진 것으로나타났다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the concept and necessity of loudness, which has recently begun to be used as an audio mastering standard suitable for digital content distribution in the broadcasting and music industry. The increasing loudness of music tracks has been a major issue in the music industry since the 1990s. This study also examines how it is applied during the sound pressure competition phenomenon called the “Loudness War.” Additionally, this study aims to empirically examine the trends of loudness and dynamic range of pop music by genre/age released from the beginning of the record industry to the latest. To this end, the list of No. 1 single song on the Billboard Year-End chart from 1965 to 2020 was considered, and the corresponding sound source was extracted from Apple Music, an American music streaming service, and variables such as integrated LUFS, True Peak, LRA (Loudness Range), and Maximum Momentary LUFS were measured with a spectrum analyzer, “Insight 2.0.” Additionally, the time series analysis by age, variance by genre/age, t-test between genres, and analysis of variance between decades were performed. As a result of the time series analysis, it was observed that the loudness level (LUFS) of the music has recently increased by an average of 30% as compared to the 1980s and 1990s, and that the dynamic range of the loudness measured by the PLR value has also increased by more than 25%. Additionally, as the LRA value decreased until the 2000s and increased by 30% after the 2010s, it was found that the dynamic range in terms of loudness is expanding. As a result of the analysis of variance, since the 1980s, the continuous decrease in the variance values of integrated LUFS and PLR have led to rise in the uniformity of the music. As a result of analyzing the differences between genres, it was found that there was no difference between the two genres that were analyzed with respect to the other loudness-related variables except for the LRA value, and the overall trend was similar. It was found to have changed significantly.
