오페라 <애스터(Asters, 紫苑物語)>를 통해 본 일본오페라의 새로운 방향성

국문 초록

이 연구는 동시대 일본오페라의 방향성을 오페라 <애스터(Asters, 紫苑物語)>의 사례를 통해서살펴보려 하였다. 일본오페라는 오페라를 통한 서구식 근대화라는 내적 지향과 일본 전통문화의세계화라는 외적 지향이 양가적이고도 중첩적으로 공존하고 있다. 2019년 일본 신국립극장에서세계 초연된 일본오페라 <애스터>는 ‘세계무대에 내놓을 일본오페라’ 시리즈의 첫 작품이다. 본연구자는 신국립극장 측으로부터 공식초청을 받고 초연과 간담회 등에 참석하였다. 이에 따라일본오페라에 대한 문헌, 공연기록 고찰과 함께 현장연구, 면담조사를 병행했다. <애스터>가 일본오페라의 진전된 성과물이라고 평가받는 이유를 소재의 선택, 구성의 중첩성, 음악적 진보라는세 가지 측면에서 찾아볼 수 있다. 이중에서도 전통의 소재를 가지고 세계 보편적 문제를 이끌어낸 중첩성을 가장 핵심적인 성공요인으로 볼 수 있다. 일본오페라로서 개성과 세계적으로 통용될수 있는 보편성, 이 두 가지 요소의 형태를 그대로 유지한 중첩성이야말로 일본오페라의 새로운방향성으로 파악할 수 있다는 것이다. 이 같은 결과는 동아시아의 공연예술콘텐츠로서 여러 유사점을 가진 한국오페라의 창작과 방향 설정에도 유의미하게 적용될 것으로 예측한다.

영문 초록

This study attempted to examine the direction of contemporary Japanese operas through the example of the opera “Asters(紫苑物語)”. Ambivalent and superimposed directions, the internal orientation of Western modernization through opera and the external orientation for globalization of traditional Japanese culture coexist in Japanese opera. The Japanese Opera “Asters”, which premiered at the New National Theater, Tokyo (NNTT) in Japan in 2019, is the first work in the series “Japanese Opera to Be Presented on the World Stage”. The researcher received an official invitation from the NNTT and attended the premiere and meetings. Accordingly, field studies and interviews were conducted along with a review of literature and performance records on Japanese opera. The reasons why “Asters” is considered an advanced achievement of Japanese opera can be found in three aspects: material selection, overlapping of composition, and musical progress. Among them, overlapping, which has brought about universal problems with traditional materials, can be seen as the most important success factor. As a Japanese opera, the individuality and universality that can be used globally, the overlapping that maintains the form of these two elements, can be understood as a new directivity of the Japanese opera. These results are expected to be meaningfully applied to the creation and direction setting of Korean opera that have many similarities as performing arts content in East Asia.
