국문 초록

한국연극 극단시스템의 한 가지 장점이라고 한다면 단단한 인적공동체 아래 극단 운영과 창작환경이 전적으로 구성원들의 선택과 결정에 달려 있어 독립적이고 자유롭다는 점이다. 극단 내구성원들의 유동성이 크고 드나듦이 빈번하지만, 단원들의 지속성이 어느 정도 유지된다면 자유롭고 독립적인 창작환경은 연극과 예술에 대한 깊은 숙의와 자기반성의 시간을 충분히 가질 수있다는 긍정적인 측면도 있다. 최근 한국의 젊은 창작집단을 중심으로 전통적인 연출가중심의창작환경에서 벗어나 창작과정의 과정성을 중시하는 과정성 중심의 연극에 대한 관심이 증가하고있다. 본 연구자가 속해 있는 극단이 2017년 러시아 연출가와의 협력으로 진행한 디바이징 프로젝트도 그간의 창작환경과 방법으로부터 탈피해 새로운 창작 방법론에 대한 숙의과정에서 나온것이었다. 본 연구는 창작자로서 수행한 불가코프의 소설 『거장과 마르가리타』를 공동창작을 통해 희곡으로 디바이징하는 과정, 희곡화된 대본을 에튜드를 구축하는 과정, 그리고 이것을 한 편의 총체적인 공연물로 디바이징하는 과정을 연구대상으로 한다. 이 디바이징 과정은 첫째, 창작구성원들의 드나듦이 빈번하고 이 과정에서 무대경험이 부족한 젊은 배우들에게 기존 창작방식을 그대로적용하는 데서 한계를 극복해 줄 수 있는가? 둘째, 창작방식의 다양화에 따른 드라마투르기적전략의 차별성은 어디서 확보할 수 있는가? 셋째, 디바이징 과정을 통해 결국 하나의 총체적이고종합적인 연극은 완성될 수 있는가?라는 질문들을 앞에 두고 진행되었으며, 이 연구를 통해 디바이징 드라마투르기 과정에서 제시되었던 시행착오와 그 결과물들을 이론적으로 접근하는 데 목적이 있다. 창작의 과정이 극단 내부의 일이고 든든한 재정적 지원이 바탕이 되는 국.공립 극장이아니고서 체계화된 스텝들과 함께 창작을 할 수 있는 여건이 되지 않는 한국연극의 상황에서창작자들이 자신들의 경험을 거울처럼 비춰볼 수 있는 사례로서의 가치를 지니길 바란다.

영문 초록

It has been a while since the role of a dramaturg was first brought to the attention of South Korean theater companies. In addition, there has been a consistent need for a professional who could oversee the entire process of staging a production. However, diversified performance texts have led to heightened interest in the dramaturg, a resident expert capable of taking a new approach to the form and structure of a play by providing an objective and analytical perspective. Above all, recent changes in the production environment add flexibility to the concept and the role of a dramaturg, depending on the process and method of creation. The varying qualifications and scope of work in different productions, as well as differentiated dramaturgy strategies specific to the form of a play, indicate that conventional approaches to defining the role of a dramaturg are no longer valid. Moreover, in a production environment where heavy emphasis is placed on the director’s humanistic knowledge and aesthetic vision, interest is growing in process-centered drama valuing a creative process. This trend is also encouraging new discussions on the expectations, concept, and role of a dramaturg. This study explored intends to explore the process of adapting The Master and Margarita, a novel by Mikhail Bulgakov, into a play, by using etudes to create a dramatized script and devising all the elements into a performance piece. The devising process was implemented based on the following questions: (1) Can this process help overcome limitations in applying the existing method of production to young actors with limited stage experience and theater with constant staff turnover? (2) How can we ensure differentiation in a dramaturgy strategy for different creation methods? (3) Will this process eventually result in a complete, integrated theater piece? This paper aimed to introduce a theoretical approach to the trials and errors involved in the process of devising dramaturgy and their results. With the exception of national or public theater companies, a large number of South Korean theater companies are tasked with creating a production with limited staff and funding. The hope is that this study will offer them an opportunity to reflect upon their creative experiences.
