한글과 영어 내러티브의 주제 연속성

국문 초록

명제의 단위인 절(clause)을 분석의 단위로 할 때 담화상의 주제 연속성은 효과적으로 나타난다(Givón, 1983). 본 연구는 총84개의 연속 그림 이야기를 한글과 영어로 기술하는 과제를 통하여 주제 연속성을 언어전이의 측면에서 조사하였다. 구체적으로 한국인과 영어 원어민의 내러티브 비교, 한국인의 한글 및 영어 내러티브 비교, 그리고 영어능숙도에 따른 한국인 세 집단의 영어 내러티브를 비교하였고, 분석 도구는 절의 주어 기능을 하는 지시어의 선택 및 이들의 주제와 주어조사 사용이었다. 발견점은 첫째, 한국인과 영어 원어민 집단 간 모국어 지시어 사용은 다르게 나타났다. 한국인은 명사와 영대용어를 선호하는 반면, 원어민은 명사와 대명사를 선호하였다. 둘째, 영어 내러티브의 지시어 사용은 한국인과 원어민 간에 통계상으로 유의한 차이가 있으나 비율비교에서 같은 경향성을 보였다. 이는 한국인과 원어민의 영어능숙도가 다르나 한국인의 영어 지시어 사용이 원어민의 규준을 향하고 있음을 시사한다. 셋째, 한국인의 한글과 영어 내러티브의 지시어 사용은 다르게 나타났다. 이때 한국인 영어능숙도 중·상집단의 영어 명사와 대명사 사용은 원어민의 경향성을 보였으나, 하집단은 한글 내러티브의 경향성을 보였다. 즉 하집단의 지시어 사용에서 한국어로부터 영어로 순방향 전이(forward transfer)가 나타났다. 넷째, 영어능숙도가 향상할수록 주어조사의 사용이 증가하는 경향성이 있었다. 이는 영어에서 한글로 역방향 전이(reverse transfer)가 발생하였음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 담화상에서 한국어와 영어 지시어 사용의 차이를 실증하여 언어상대주의 가설을 지지한다. 또한 본 연구에서 나타난 양방향 언어전이(bidirectional language transfer)는 다중언어 화자의 머릿속사전이 동적이고 가변적임을 시사한다.

영문 초록

Topic continuity in the discourse can be shown effectively when a clause is the unit of analysis on the proposition (Givón, 1983). This study investigates topic continuity using data that describes 24 picture stories in Korean and English. A total of 84 writing pieces were collected to compare the referential choice in the subject position of each clause, which is a common quality of Korean and English, and the use of Korean subject and topic markers. Multiple data sources were compared: (1) written narratives of native Korean users and native English users; (2) Korean and English written narratives by native Korean users; (3) Three English proficiency groups of native Korean users in their narratives. There are four main findings. First, the referential choice of two mother tongue groups was different. Koreans preferred nouns and zero anaphors, while native English users preferred nouns and pronouns. Second, the referential choice in English narratives of two groups differed statistically, but the same tendency in the referential choice was shown. This suggests that although Koreans and native English users have different English proficiency, the use of English reference by Koreans is directed at the norms of native English users. Third, the referential choice in Korean and English narratives of Koreans was different. Specifically, the use of nouns and pronouns of middle and advanced English proficiency groups in English narratives showed the tendency of native English users, while that of the low English proficiency group in English narratives showed the tendency of Korean narratives. In other words, forward transfer from Korean to English appeared in the referential choice from the low English group. Fourth, the use of subject and topic markers did not have significant statistical differences by English proficiency grouping, but there was a tendency for the use of subject markers to increase as English proficiency improves. This suggests reverse transfer from English to Korean. This study supports the linguistic relative hypothesis from the angle of topic continuity by comparing Korean and English referential choices in the discourse. Furthermore, the bidirectional language transfer effect shown from Korean to English and from English to Korean suggests that the mental lexicon of the multiple language users can be dynamic and unfixed.
