아동․청소년의 자아존중감 변화양상에 관한 종단연구

국문 초록

본 종단연구는 2011부터 6년 동안 4회 즉 초5 학년부터 고1(2011, 2013, 2016, 2017)까지 수집된 한국아동청소년(초4 패널) 자료를 근거로 아동의 자아존중감 변화양상을 살펴보았다. 2수준 다층성장모형을 이용하여 1수준에는 시간에 따라 변화하는 교우와의 관계 및 교사와의 관계 변수를 넣었고, 2수준에는 부모학력, 부모 양육 방식(관심 및 학대), 교과성적관련 자기평가, 삶에 대한 만족도와 성별을 변수로 사용하여 자아존중감에 미치는 영향력을 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 초등 5년부터 고등1학년 시기의 자아존중감은 비선형(Quadratic) 변화양상을 보였다. 변화율에 있어서 성차는 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 교우와의 관계와 교사와의 긍정적인 관계가 미치는 영향에 있어서는 교우와의 관계의 크기가 더 높았다. 초등 5학년 때의 자아존중감에 영향을 준 변수로는 주요과목에 대한 성적평가(만족도)가 가장 높았으며, 그 다음으로 양육방식에서는 부모의 관심 변수가, 부모학대 변수의 효과보다 더 컸으며, 남학생의 자아존중감이 여학생보다 더 높았다. 아동의 자아존 중감 향상을 위한 개인, 가정 특히 학교에서의 자아존중감 제고를 위한 방안을 살펴보았다.

영문 초록

This longitudinal study investigated the pattern of Korean children’s self-esteem using Children & Youth Panel Data that were collected at four different time points (2011, 2013, 2016, 2017) over six years, from 5 th grade to 10 th grade. A two-level growth model was used to investigate specifically the effect on the self-esteem of children and youth of their relationships with peers and teachers by incorporating them at level-1. At level-2, parental education level, satisfaction with five major course achievement assessments, general satisfaction with life, and experiences with different child-rearing behaviors (e.g., caring or mistreatment) and gender were investigated for their effect on self-esteem. The results of analyses showed that children’s self-esteem was changing nonlinearly. The effect of peer relationships, a time-varying covariate, was larger than the impact of their relationships with teachers. Among the level-2 variables, the effect of self-assessment of their major course achievement was the largest followed by gender, and then parental care. However, the effect of parental level of education and parental mistreatment of their children were not statistically significantly associated with children and youth’s self-esteem. Male students’ self-esteem was higher than that of females. Suggestions to improve children and youth’s self-esteem are offered.
