고안철자 분석을 통하여 살펴 본 초등학생들의 영어철자 지식 탐색

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 초등학교 3학년~6학년 학생들의 고안철자 분석을 통하여 이들의 영어철자 지식에 대하여 탐색해보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 3학년 22명, 4학년 24명, 5 학년 22명, 6학년 21명의 학생들이 그림과 함께 제시된 영어 단어를 철자로 쓰게 하는 단어쓰기 검사에 참여하였다. 단어쓰기 검사 결과는 단어별로 정답률을 구한 후학습자들이 작성한 고안철자를 학년별, 단어별로 정리하여 비교하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같았다. 우선 전반적으로 전체 학생의 철자 지식의 정도는 높지 않은 것으로 보였다. 각 학년의 절반 정도의 학생만이 주어진 단어의 50% 정도의 철자만을 정확히 쓸 수 있었으며 6학년에 이르러서 영어단어 철자 인식의 향상이 두드러졌다. 고안철자의 분석 결과 3학년에서 고안철자를 작성한 학생들 중 신생단계(emergent stage)와 초기 알파벳 단계 (early letter name-alphabetic stage)에 있는 것으로 보이는 학습자들이 관찰되었다. 4학년 학생들 중 중기 알파벳 이름 단계 (middle letter name-alphabetic stage)에 있는 것으로 보이는 학생들이 관찰되었으며, 4학년 중 많은 학생들이 음절과 접사 단계(syllable and affixes stage)에 들어가지 못한 것으로 보였다. 4학년들은 아직 단어내 음절 경계에 대한 개념이 정립되어 있지 않았으며 영어의 1음절 단어를 한국어 발음식의 2음절로 표기하려 하는 흔적을 찾아볼 수 있었다. 5학년은 음절과 접사 단계에 입문한 학생이 많지 않은 것으로 보이나, 6학년의 경우에는 다음절어 철자의 정답자 수와 오답자의 고안철자 분석을 통하여 볼 때 음절과 접사 단계 초기에 입문한 학생들이 많은 것으로 관찰되었다. 연구 결과를 바탕 으로 좀 더 효과적인 초등학생들의 영어단어 철자 지도를 위한 방법을 제언하였다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate Korean elementary school students invented spellings and to suggest pedagogical implications on how to teach English spellings more effectively to Korean elementary students. Twenty two 3rd graders, 24 4th graders, 22 fifth graders and 21 6th graders participated in this study. The students were asked to spell 16~20 words in English provided with pictures. For the analysis, the correct spelling rates of the words were calculated and the students invented spellings were analyzed based on Bear and Templeton (1998) s developmental stages of spelling. Some of the 3rd graders invented spellings reflect that they are in the emergent stage of spelling development. For some 4th graders, their invented spellings tell that they are in the middle letter name-alphabetic stage. And it seems that some of the 4th graders have not entered the syllable and affixes stage and they transfer their Korean knowledge to spell the unknown English words. In case of 5th graders, their invented spellings show that they have not entered the syllables and affixes stage. Many of 6th graders seem to have entered the syllables and affixes stage since they could spell the multisyllable words correctly and their invented spellings also show the trace of the stage. Based on the results of the study, several pedagogical implications are suggested.
