방정환 개벽사상의 실천적 텍스트로서 난파선 연구

국문 초록

방정환이 1922년에 번역 및 번안해서 출간한 사랑의 선물 속 난파선 은 1920년에 가정독물간행에서 출간한마에다 아키라(前田晃)의 쿠오레 을 저본으로 삼았다. 마에다 아키라본과 원작인 아미치스본을 비교했을 때 내용과 서술자의 시점 차이는 없었다. 즉 마에다 아키라는 원작에 충실히 번역한 것이다. 그러나 방정환이 번역한 난파선 과 마에다 아키라본과 비교했을 때 내용 차이는 없으나 서술자의 시점 차이가달랐다. 마에다본은 관찰차 시점이지만 방정환본은 전지적 작가 시점으로 서술되었다. 방정환이 마에다본과 시점을달리 한 이유는 높은 문맹률과 구술문화 시대의 전통적인 서사 방식에 익숙한 독자들을 위한 서술전략이었다. 전지적 서술자는 관찰자 시점보다 많은 정보를 알고 있었기 때문에, 마리오가 배를 탄 사연을 저본과 다르게 앞에배치한 것이다. 마리오의 사연을 앞으로 배치한 이유는 독자에게 ‘동정’을 끌어내기 위한 것이었다. 동정은 상상을 통해사 타인이 처한 상황에 고통을 겪고 느낀다. 즉 진정한 사회의 연대는 타자와의 감정이입에 수반한 동정에 기초하게 되므로, 이러한 윤리적 감정을 민족과 등치시킬 때 마리오와 줄리에트는 조선인으로, 침몰하는 배는 조선으로 상정되며, 난파선 을 읽는 조선 독자들은 침몰하는 고통과 그들을 구원하고자 하는 결의 등이 발현될 수밖에 없다. 한편 방정환이 사랑의 선물 의 첫 작품으로 난파선 을 수록한 이유는 마리오의 희생으로 줄리에트는 ‘회생’ 하여 ‘새 생’, ‘인간 생활이 신국면’을 열 희망이 생긴 것이다. 이 점이 조선의 어린이에게 주는 선물집에 첫 번째로담고자 했던 방정환의 마음이었다. 즉 방정환에게 난파선 은 개벽 사상에 이르는 실천적 텍스트이자 희망의 메시지였다.

영문 초록

The “Wrecked Ship” in the “Gifts of Love” translated and adapted by Bang Jeong-hwan in 1922 was based on the “Cuore” by Maeda Akira( ) published by the Family Book Publication in 1920. According to comparison between the Cuore by Maeda Akira and the original Cuore by Amicis, the contents and the viewpoint of a narrator were not different. In other words, Maeda Akira accurately translated the original work. However, in accordance with comparison between the “Wrecked Ship” translated by Bang Jeong-hwan and Cuore by Akira, the difference was identified not in the contents but in the viewpoint of a narrator. While Akira adopted the viewpoint of an observer, Bang Jeong-hwan applied the omniscient viewpoint. Bang Jeong-hwan selected the different viewpoint from as the narration strategy for readers who were familiar with the conventional narration method in the period of oral culture and due to high illiteracy rate. The story of Mario was placed on the first part to induce sympathy from readers. Sympathy experiences and feels pain of others through imagination. In other words, since the true social solidarity is based on sympathy accompanying the empathy with others, such ethical emotion is juxtaposed to the ethnic people, Mario and Juliette are assumed as the Koreans and the sinking ship as Joseon. The Joseon people reading the “Wrecked Ship” can’t help revealing pain from sinking and the resolution to save others from the sinking ship. Meanwhile, Bang Jeong-hwan placed the “Wrecked Ship” as the first episode in the “Gifts of Love” because Juliette was revived and found hope for new life and ‘turning point in a human life’ through the sacrifice of Mario. It’s Bang Jeong-hwan’s thinking to place the“Wrecked Ship” as the first gift for children in Joseon. That is, the “Wrecked Ship” was the practical text and the message of hope enabling Bang Jeong-hwan to form the reformation ideology.
