인지시학의 이론과 해석의 실제

국문 초록

기호는 유폐된 존재인 인간이 소통을 위해 고안한 행위다. 그러나 기존의 기호학은 기호를 인간 경험의 문제로여기지 않고, 그것을 외부 세계의 사건이나 현상으로 생각함으로써 이론으로서의 한계를 노정하게 되었다. 기존 기호학의 입장에 따르면, 언어는 세계의 구조를 반영하며, 따라서 언어를 분석함으로써 알게 되는 것은 세계의 구조이지, ‘역동적으로 세계와 상호작용 하는’ 우리의 마음이 아니다. 설령 인간의 마음을 고려한다고 해도, 그것은 어디까지나 언어의 체계성에 대응하는 ‘고정된’ 마음일 뿐이다. 기호는 어디까지나 ‘인간적 경험’이다. 그러므로 기호의 해석은 그것이 만들어지는 기제와 과정, 즉 우리의 신체와 인지를 경유해야 한다. 인지시학은 인지과학의 성과를 바탕으로 한 학문으로, 우리의 인지 기제를 경유하여 시를 읽을 수 있는 구체적인 방법을 알려준다. 기존에 해석의 방법론으로서 자리매김해 온 입장은 다름 아닌 구조주의에 기반을 둔 기호학이었다. 그러나 그러한 기호학은 텍스트의 창작과 해석에 있어서 가장 중요한 ‘신체’를 논의에서 누락하였기에 한계를 노정한다. 우리는 ‘기호적 인간’이며, 우리가 사용하는 기호는 신체에서 비롯될 뿐만 아니라 신체를 경유해야만 비로소 해석된다. 기존의 기호학은 신체를 다루지 않았기에 창작 과정은 물론, 해석에 있어서도 그 근거를 제시하지 못해 한계를 드러낼 수밖에 없는 것이다. 인지시학은 어떻게 해석에 신체의 국면을 들여올 수 있는지에 관한 적절한 예가 될 수 있다. 본고는 인지시학의 주요 개념들을 원용하여 서정주의 시 화사(花蛇) 를 해석한다. 인지시학의 개념들을 원용한읽기는 서정주의 화사 가 어떤 방법과 과정을 통해 창작되었는지를 잘 드러낸다. 화사 는 시인이 시적 대상으로부터 신화와 전설 등, 서양과 동양을 막론한 다양한 이야기를 연상해내는 방식으로 ‘비가시적인 세계’를 형상화한다. 그리고 그러한 공간을 현실의 공간-장소에 결구(結構)시켜 일상적 공간을 시적인 공간으로, 또 시적인 공간을일상적 공간으로 만들어내는 데까지 나아간다. 이것이 서정주 시의 한 특성을 이룬다. 인지시학은 시가 창작되는 과정과 해석에 작용하는 인지과정을 읽어냄으로써 이처럼 해석의 근거뿐만 아니라 미학적 특성까지 밝혀낼 수 있다.

영문 초록

Signs are actions designed for communication by humans, who are incarcerated. However, existing semiotics did not regard signs as problems of human experience, but rather as events or phenomena in the outside world, thereby setting limitations as theories. According to the position of existing semiotics, language reflects the structure of the world, so it is the structure of the world that we learn by analyzing the language, not our mind to “dynamically interact with the world.” Even considering the human mind, it is only a ‘fixed’ mind that responds to the systematicity of language. Signs are ‘human experiences.’ Therefore, the interpretation of a sign must pass through the mechanism and process by which it is made, that is, our body and cognition. Cognitive Poetics is a study based on the achievements of cognitive science, and it provides specific ways to read poetry through our cognitive mechanism. The position that has previously established itself as a methodology of interpretation was none other than semiotics based on structuralism. However, such semiotics are limited because the most important ‘body’ in the creation and interpretation of text is omitted from the discussion. We are ‘symbolic humans’, and the signs we use not only originate from the body but only through the body. Existing semiotics have not dealt with the body, so they cannot provide evidence not only in the creative process but also in the interpretation, forcing them to reveal their limitations. Cognitive poetics can be an appropriate example of how to bring the body into interpretation. This paper interprets Seo Jeongju’s poem, “Hwasa”, using the main concepts of cognitive poetics. Reading, which uses the concepts of cognitive poetics, clearly reveals how and through what process lyricism “Hwasa” was created. “Hwasa” embodies the ‘non-visible world’ in a way that the poet reminds of various stories regardless of the West and the East, including myths and legends from poetic objects. And by connecting such a space to a real space-place, it goes as far as creating a daily space as a poetic space and a poetic space as a daily space. This constitutes a characteristic of Seo Jeongju’s poem. Cognitive poetics can reveal not only the basis for interpretation but also the aesthetic characteristics by reading the cognitive process that acts on the process of poetry creation and interpretation.
