국문 초록

이 글은 박태원의 수필, 번역, 소설 등의 산문을 중심으로 유럽 문화 표상을 살펴보았다. 박태원은 세계시민으로서의 감각을 유지하고 있었고, 이러한 감각은 그의 문학 속 유럽 표상을 통해 구현되었다. 그에게 유럽은 언제든지 여행하고 싶은 낭만적 동경의 대상, 자신의 문학적 세계를 축조하기 위해 비판적으로 연대할 대상, 동일한실존적 상황에 놓인 존재들의 공간으로 표상되었다. 박태원의 산문에서 유럽 문화는 기호품의 대상으로 등장하여이국적 취향을 드러내는 역할을 한다. 박태원은 문학적 성찰의 대상으로서 러시아 리얼리즘 문학과 아일랜드의 제임스 조이스에 연대감을 표현했다. 박태원에게 유럽 문학은 일방적인 숭배의 대상이 아니라 비판적인 연대의 대상이었다. 유럽을 배경으로 한 그의 소설에서 프랑스 파리는 문화적 상징성을 지닌 공간이지만, 경제적 궁핍을 면하지 못하는 주변부 인물의 삶의 공간이라는 양가성의 도시로 표상되었다.

영문 초록

Korean modern literature was formed in the ambivalence of tradition and innovation. Modern Korean artists actively embraced European culture as part of their efforts to innovate. As a symbol of modernity, European culture provided literary power to modern Korean writers as they became the subject of literature classes. Park Tae-won provided literary nourishment by accepting European culture through reading European literature and watching music and movies. This article looked at representations of European culture, focusing on prose such as Park Tae-won’s essays, translations, and novels. Park Tae-won maintained his sense as a global citizen, and this sense was embodied through European representations in his literature. For him, Europe was represented as a space of beings in the same existential situation, an object of romantic admiration that he wanted to travel to at any time, an object of critical solidarity to build his own literary world. For Park Tae-won, European culture was not an object of alert, but an object of romantic admiration that provided creative inspiration. In Park Tae-won’s prose, European culture appears as an object of preference and plays a role in revealing exotic tastes. Park Tae-won expressed a sense of solidarity with Russian proletarian literature and James Joyce of Ireland as the object of literary reflection. Park Tae-won was wary of excessive glorification of Europe, representing Paris as a space of ambivalence. In the 1930s, during the colonial Joseon, a number of overseas travel articles were published and foreign literature groups appeared in the literary world, raising the enthusiasm for Europe culturally. Park Tae-won revealed a romantic longing for European culture while also revealing a critical sense of solidarity.
