조선후기 여성 교훈서로 본 시가(媤家) 흥망 책임 담론의 형성과 발전

국문 초록

17세기 이후부터 조선 양반 여성은 이전시기에 비해 보다 직접적으로 성별규범 수행을 강요받기 시작하였다. 이때부터 양반가에서는 혼례방식의 변화와 함께 가족의 생활권역이 점차 시가 쪽으로 이동하였다. 양반 남성들 입장에서는 집안 유지를 위해 시집살이를 하는 여성들의 협조가 필요하였으므로 여성 교훈서를 집필하기 시작하였다. 그들은 여성의 성별규범 수행 유무가 시가의 흥망으로 연결된다는 담론을 만들었다. 첫째, 여성의 가계 운용 역할을 매우 중시하며 절약과 근면함을 유지해야 한다고 주장하였다. 둘째, 여성이 감정을 절제해야만 인간관계가 잘유지될 것이라고 경고하였다. 먼저 투기는 시가를 망치게 하는 주범이라고 단정하였다. 또한 여성을 남편 형제나동서 등과의 불화 원인으로 지목하였다. 셋째, 정절 이데올로기를 강조하며 성리학적 사유세계에 반하는 신앙 활동을 금지하였다. 이로써 여성 교훈서는 시가를 여성 삶의 터전이라고 정의하면서 여성의 시가 흥망 책임 담론을발전시키며 여성들이 시가의 법도를 지킬 수밖에 없도록 유도하였다.

영문 초록

Since the 17th century, aristocratic women of Joseon Dynasty were outright compelled to follow gender norms more so than in earlier times. Since then, the living zone of a family gradually shifted to the husband’s family in the aristocratic families along with the change in wedding method. From the stance of aristocratic men, women s cooperation was necessary for family management. Therefore, they started to write instructional books for women, which were ‘proposals for patrilocality.’ They created the discourse that a woman’s fulfillment of gender norms is linked to the fortunes of her husband’s family. First, aristocratic men argued that women must maintain frugality and diligence, emphasizing their role of household management. Second, they warned that women can have well-maintained relationships only when they control their emotions. Above all, they decided that jealousy is the main culprit that brings ruin to the husband’s family. They also pointed out women as the cause of discord with the husband’s brothers or a wife of the husband’s brother. Third, they prohibited religious activities that contradict the ideology of chastity and the Neo-Confucian world of thoughts. Hence, instructional books for women defined the husband’s family as the foundation of a woman’s life, developed the discourse of woman being responsible for the rise and fall of her husband’s family, and induced women to obey the laws of their husband’s family.
