사회 교과서가 초등학생의 이주민에 대한 인식에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

목적 본 연구는 사회 교과서가 초등학생의 이주민에 대한 인식에 미치는 영향을 분석하는데 있다. 방법 이를 위하여 충북에 소재한 초등학교 5학년 학생 71명을 대상으로 독립변인을 교과서 차시 중 ‘임진왜란’과 ‘6.25 전쟁’으로 설정하였고, 종속변인으로 참여자들의 고정관념 구조를 분석하는 실험을 설계하였다. 결과 실험집단의 고정관념 구조에 대한 평균 차이를 ANOVA로 분석한 결과, ‘임진왜란’을 학습한 참여자들은 일본 계 이주민에 대한 고정관념의 구조 중 ‘능력’을 낮게 평가하는 경향이 나타났다. 결론 일본계 이주민에 대한 ‘능력’이 부정적으로 나타난 것과 대비하여 탈북민에 대한 고정관념의 구조에 유의한 변화가 없는 것은 사회과 역사 영역의 서술 중 일부가 민족 중심적일 가능성을 시사하고 있다. 그렇기 때문에 교과서의 차시 중 ‘임진왜란’과 같은 서술은 일본인에 대한 증오와 적개심을 키울 가능성이 높다. 따라서 교과서의 구성은 전쟁 일변도가 아닌 상호 우호적인 교류를 교과 내용에 포함시킴으로써 균형적인 서술을 할 필요가 있다. 또한 일부 주제에 세계사적인 관점을 도입하여 세계시민적으로서 사고 방식을 학습자들에게 제공할 기회를 줄 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of social studies textbooks on elementary school students perceptions of immigrants. Methods To this end, for 71 elementary school students located in North Chungcheong Province, independent variables were set as ‘Imjin War’ and ‘6.25 War’ in textbooks, and an experiment was designed to analyze the stereotype structure of participants as dependent variables. Results As a result of the analysis, participants who studied ‘Imjin War’ tended to underestimate ‘competence’ among the structures of stereotypes about Japanese immigrants. Conclusions As a result of ANOVA analysis of the average difference in the stereotype structure of the experimental group, it was found that participants who studied the ‘Imjin War’ tended to underestimate the ‘ability’ among the stereotype structures of Japanese immigrants. The absence of a significant change in the structure of stereotypes about North Korean defectors in contrast to the negative ‘ability’ of Japanese immigrants suggests the possibility that some of the descriptions of social studies and history are ethnocentric. For this reason, descriptions such as ‘Imjin War’ in textbooks are highly likely to increase hatred and hostility toward the Japanese. Therefore, the composition of the textbook needs to be balanced by including mutually friendly exchanges in the content of the curriculum, rather than unilateral warfare. There is also a need to introduce a world-historical perspective to some topics, giving learners the opportunity to think in a cosmopolitan way.
