고등학생 대상 비판적 사고력 증진과 자기목소리 내기 읽기·쓰기 연계 수업에 관한 연구

국문 초록

목적 본 사례연구는 국내 자율형 사립 고등학교 방과 후 영어 읽기·쓰기 연계 수업에서 비판적 접근법을 활용한 수업 이후 학생들이 비판적 사고하기와 자기목소리를 표출하였는지 여부 및 그 표출방식을 탐색해보고자 하였다. 방법 수업에 참여한 학생은 총 24명이었으며, 이들의 영어 학습에 대한 배경은 설문을 통해 파악하였다. 수업시간에 학생들은 총 3회에 걸쳐 영어지문을 읽은 후 반응적 글쓰기를 하였는데, Stapleton(2001)과 Alagozlu(2007)를 바탕으로 학생들의 글에서 비판적 사고력이 표현되었는지 여부와 글쓰기 패턴을 분석하였다. 자기목소리 표출 여부는 Larsen-Freeman과 Long(1991)을 사용하여 분석하였다. 결과 학생들의 글쓰기 과제 분석 결과 주장, 이유, 근거와 같은 비판적 사고력 요소가 많이 발견되었고 자기 목소리도 비교적 자주 표현하였음을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 반박과 반증은 드물었으며 결론이 아예 없는 경우도 있었다. 결론 교사들은 비판적 질문하기와 토론하기 등의 활동을 통해 학생들이 좀 더 비판적으로 글을 읽고 적극적으로 자신의 목소리를 낼 수 있도록 영어 읽기와 쓰기 수업을 구상하고 운영할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study explores Korean high school students’ critical thinking and voices in writing in an integrated reading and writing class based on critical approach. Methods A total of 24 students participated in the study and they met two hours per week for 10 weeks. Background questionnaires and students’ essays were collected, and in order to find out if critical thinking is expressed in their writing, the researchers utilized Stapleton (2001)’s critical thinking element evaluation criteria and Alagozlu (2007)’s linguistic indicators. Also, self-voicing is analyzed based on Larsen-Freeman and Long (1991). Results Data analysis revealed that many critical thinking elements (claims, reasons, evidences) and self voices were included in students’ essays. However, not many students’ writings included opposition and refutation, and many students did not show any conclusions, either. Conclusions These results suggest that school teachers need to design their language class for students to have more chances to critically think about what they read and project their own voice as readers and writers.
