A Case Study on Effects and EFL College Students’ Perceptions of Mirroring Blending Classes During the COVID-19 Pandemic

국문 초록

목적 본 연구에서는 코로나 팬데믹 상황에서 사회적 거리두기 준수를 위한 방안으로 실시한 지방 전문대학의 미러링 블렌딩 영어수업 사례를 중심으로 참여자의 수업 만족도와 선호도, 성취도를 분석하여 수업의 효과성을 알아보기 위한 연구이다. 방법 코로나 팬데믹 상화 속에서 진행된 온라인 동영상 수업, 온라인 실시간 수업, 미러링 블렌딩 수업 등 세 가지 방식의 수업에 대한 학생들의 인식을 조사하여 수업 흥미도, 만족도, 및 선호도를 분석하고, 이러한 수업방식이 영어점수에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지 조사하였다. 학생들의 인식을 파악하기 위한 개방형 질문을 포함한 설문 조사와 더불어 사전, 중간, 사후 시험결과는 SPSS 통계를 통해 분석하였다. 결과 세 가지 수업방식 중에서 학생들은 정해진 시간에 접속해야 하는 불편함과 수업 중 발생하는 접속의 불안정성 등을 이유로 온라인 실시간 수업보다는 온라인 동영상 수업을 더 선호하는 것으로 나타났다. 미러링 블래디드 수업에 대해서는 대면 수업에 대한 만족감과 수업집중의 효과성에 대해서는 매우 긍정적인 인식이 많았지만, 코로나 지속 시 2021학년도에 선호하는 수업방식에 대해서는 온라인 동영상 수업이 가장 높게 나타났다. 이는 학습자가 원하는 시간에 수강 가능한 편리성과 반복 학습을 통한 자기 주도학습이 가능한 동영상 수업의 장점에 기인한 것으로 보였다. 온라인 동영상 수업을 진행한 후 실시된 사전 평가 점수에서 미러링 블렌딩 수업 후 실시한 사후평가 점수가 향상되어 대면 수업을 병행한 미러링 수업이 영어성취도 향상에 도움이 되는 것으로 나타났다. 결론 본 실제 수업 사례의 자료와 분석결과는 코로나 팬데믹 상황에서 학생들의 학업 역량을 강화하기 위한 학습자 중심의 온라인 수업 설계 및 운영에 소중한 기초 참고자료로 활용되기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purpose of this study is to examine the responses of learners after online video lectures, online real-time lectures, and a new English class, called the mirroring blending class, which integrates online real-time lecture and offline face-to-face class at the same time during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Methods For this study, 104 junior college students participated. A survey with open-ended questions was conducted at the end of the year and the scores of the pre-, middle- and post-test were compared to see the English achievement focused on TOEIC content. Results The survey analysis revealed that students preferred online recorded videos rather than online real-time lectures because of the disconnection and discomfort for real-time lectures. In addition, students strongly agreed that offline face-to-face is the most enjoyable and effective way for them to concentrate on English learning. Nevertheless, many students preferred online video lectures in 2021 if the COVID-19 pandemic lasts. Conclusions Based on the results, a mirroring blending class integrating online real-time and offline, which keeps the social distancing in COVID-19 pandemic situation, was a helpful and effective way to improve TOEIC achievement level in English classes.
