현대 미얀마 불교의 역할과 여성 출가

국문 초록

미얀마의 상좌부불교는 교학과 명상을 주축으로 이루어져 있다. 미얀마 불교에 대한 논의들은 주로 상좌부불교와 관련한 전통적 교리해석이나 대승불교와의 비교선상에서 다루어졌다. 기존의 논의들과는 달리, 본 논문에서는미얀마 불교의 현대적 역할론과 여성출가에 대해 소개했다. 현대의 미얀마불교는 전통적 승가의 역할수행과 동시에 대중성을 확보하기 위해 좀더 세속화가 진행되었다. 도심의 수행센터설립과 재가자들이 자유롭게 참여할 수 있는 도시불교를 확대시켰고, 대중설법회를 개최해 전통적 불교 교리부터 세속생활에서의 문제까지 다양한 주제를 다루었다. 나아가 소외계층을 대상으로 한 사회복지활동 등을 통해 대중성을 확보했다. 미얀마 불교는 정식 출가를 하는 출가의식 이외에도 단기출가 의식인 신쀼(ShinPyu)와 여성출가를 대상으로 하는 띨라신(Thilashin)이 있다. 신쀼는 남자 아이들이 1-6개월 정도 출가해서 승려 생활을 하는 것을 말하는 것으로 개인 의사에 따라 기간과 영구 출가를 정한다. 띨라신은 8(10)계를 지키며 수행하는 여성 출가자를 가리키는 말로 국가 팔리어 시험의 마지막 4번째 단계인Dhammācariya 시험에 합격하여 활동할 수 있다. 최근에는 많은 띨라신들이 이 시험에 합격하고 활발한 교화 활동을 하고 있지만, 승단 내의 비구승과 다른 차별 역시 존재하고 있어 사회적 문제로 대두되고 있다.

영문 초록

Myanmar is the second largest country in Southeast Asia after Indonesia and plays an important role in Southeast Asia’s economy, politics and religion. However, it is also a country that has recently been reported around the world for military coups and civil democratization movements. Of Myanmar’s total population, 87.9% are Buddhists, and it is a Buddhist country that has the saying, “To be a Burmese is to be a Buddhist.” In the mid-11th century, Myanmar’s Sangjwa Buddhism began when Anawratha, King of the Bagan Dynasty, converted various religions scattered in Myanmar to Sangjwa Buddhism and sold them to Bagan. Studies on Myanmar Buddhism in Korea have been conducted in various fields, including doctrine and meditation, starting with the introduction of Myanmar Buddhism according to changes in previous dynasties. In recent years, research on the marriage system and education of Southeast Asian Buddhism has also drawn keen attention to modern marriage. However, these studies mainly deal with men, so little with women becoming Buddhist priests. This is basically due to the lack of data and information, and education on female participants and status in the church are not as important as male participants. Therefore, in this paper, we give an overview of the small but insignificant history of female start-ups.
