매체로 본 근대도시 여성의 사회적 의미에 대한 소고

국문 초록

이 연구의 목적은 근대도시 여성의 사회적 의미를 지칭을 중심을 하여 분석하는 데 있다. ‘여학생’, ‘신여성’, ‘모던걸’은 사회적 언어로서 자리를 잡았고 근대를 상징하는 하나의 기호가 되었다. 이에 따라 본고는 근대도시 여성을 지칭하는 ‘여학생’, ‘신여성’, ‘모던걸’을 바라보는 당대의 시각을 텍스트의 상황 맥락을 통해 살펴보고자 한다. ‘여학생’은 ‘신여성’과 ‘모던걸’의 시작이 되었다. 학생의 신분으로서 여학생은 도시공간에 등장한 새 로운 여성이었다. 근대소비문화를 이끌며 하나의 문화현상으로 매체에서 다루어지는 구체적 대상은 ‘여학생’이었다. 그들은 1920년대 초반에는 ‘신여성’으로서 자신의 개성과 사회의 개조, 여성해방과 같은 여성 자신의 문제를 자각하고자 했다. 1920년대 중반을 지나면서 여학생은 양가적 측면에서 평가되는 ‘신여성’으로 서술되었다. 근대도시 속의 여학생은 ‘신여성’으로서 계몽과 해방, 주체적 자각의 텍스트로, 또는 허영과 사치의 상징으로 서술되었다. 당대의 지식인 계층의 시각에서 서술된 매체에서 ‘신여성’의 또 다른 이름은 부정적인 의미를 담은 ‘모던걸’이라는 지칭이다. 당대 사회의 ‘모던걸’은 여학생과 신여성의 나쁜 측면만을 보여주었다. 나쁜 신여성 ‘모던걸’은 그들의 정체성에 대한 분석이 아닌 외양적 모습을 통해 평가되고 있었다. 이 글에서 살펴본 ‘여학생’, ‘신여성’, ‘모던걸’은 근대사회에 등장한 새로운 형태의 여성 존재 방식을 일컫는 표현으로 그 사회적 의미를 말하고자 한다. 이 연구를 통해 근대도시 여성을 지칭하는 다양한 언어들의 사회적 의미를 기존의 연구들과는 다른 층위에서 볼 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the social significance of the women living in modern cities by focusing on the terms referring to these women. Terms such as Female Student”, “New Woman” and “Modern Girl” have been established as a social language and become symbols of modernity. Therefore, this study analyzes the perspectives toward the terms Female Student, New Woman, and Modern Girl that refer to modern city-dwelling women by examining the situational context of the era. “Female Student” was the beginning of “New Woman” and “Modern Girl”. The term referred to the women who appeared in society with the position of student. Moreover, they were the main subjects of asocial phenomenon thatthe evolution of the modern consumer culture and were addressed as such by the media. They tried to become aware of various problems pertaining to their identity, social remodeling, and women’s liberation. They were often described as a New Woman and evaluated bilaterally. In modern cities, female students symbolized enlightenment, liberation and self-awareness and in some cases, vanity and extravagance. Modern Girl is another negative term used to refer to the New Woman by the media that narrate the perspectives of the intellect of the times. The term Modern Girl highlights only the negative aspects of the New Woman and Female Student. Hence, the Modern Girl or bad New Woman, was evaluated based on appearance alone rather than any analysis of heridentity. “Female Student”, “New Woman” and “Modern Girl” are phrases that refer to the new form of women that appeared in modern society and this study endeavors to reveal their social significance. This study is expected to provide a new perspective on the social significance of various terms referring to the women living in modern cities, as well.
